Multipla The Toad.

Introduction

So after owning all sorts of stuff from Buicks to Polos I've finally lost the plot and purchased a "bug eye" Multipla. It's a 110 JTD ELX with only 35k miles but it's a bit (err very) rough around the edges. The colour is horrid, actually I've always hated all Multiplas so it was an interesting choice. Anyway I presume you're not after my life story.

For me this is a second car so it's not about performance (obviously), it's about comfort and practicality. We'll see how long that lasts. I am very tempted to slam it, which wouldn't be comfy or practical at all. But it would look sooo right. I think it will eventually end up on airbags, I dont think I could ever go back to creeping over speedbumps after the amount of fun I've had this week.

Anyway, I've not done much to it yet and I've not got much money so it's a work in progress.

Here is a chop I did of the for sale pic to whet your appetite:

So sadly the missus has peed on the bonfire and insists she would rather go for black and not grey. So we've not even started yet and the plans are already out of the window!

Day 1:

Love this car already. Double electric sunroof, really comfy, good on fuel, should have done this ages ago.

Added some stickers and copious amounts of airfresheners (some kid has puked in the back), also added some handcuffs hanging from the rear bumper and hammered the hell out of some of the dents.

Aww yeah, stickers. Now I'm cool.

Day 2:

Which after a bit of cheeky 5-up speedbump action at high speeds lasted around 3 days... :D

Must say I like it much more now that it's broken, much more character.

Then after about 5 days some more parts started showing up

Bosch flatblade wipers (yaaay I can seeeee)

K&N filter (again only because the old one was cack)

O HAI

Think that's it for now, more to come.
Was just thinking about this car.. anything happened?

Things have indeed happened. Things always happen - except I'm generally too lazy to update this thread!

In fact one of the things that happened gave me great pleasure. I drove into the back of a chavved up 206 and ruined his already ruined car (accidentally I promise). He was turning left at a T junction and as I was looking right for traffic and rolling forward he stalled it and I tried parking in his boot. That made my day. More so when he got out and it transpired he had no insurance and wasn't going to claim he had whiplash. WIN.

The downside of that was that my KC spotlights had made some large dents in my bonnet which wasn't shutting very well. I have since mostly remedied this with use of a hammer.

The following day some thieving scrote took a liking to said spotlights and decided to nick them. Jokes on him when he takes the covers off and sees they're smashed to bits and not even KCs. Oh well, shame I lost the covers, part of living around London I guess.

Made some cool looking stencils in illustrator - first printed it on paper

cut it out in some cardboard

and sprayed it on my tyres

That was fun and also free. You may notice I also decided to put pop rivets all around the edges of my front wings. Also fun and free. Wings were ruined anyway.

Went to Bromley Pageant and upset a few purists who went along to chat chassis numbers while I rode around on my ridiculous bike whilst loudly and accidentally* confusing the Ferrari owners club with the MR2 owners club.

*this may not have been an accident but it was amusing

Raised an eyebrow or two :D

And then recently I managed to get a weekend away from the missus at a mates barn where we pissed about with angle grinders and generally made a mess. I had procured some (brand new FK) lowering springs for a Fiat Bravo which I thought may do the trick on the retard bus. I also had some old front struts which made an appearance earlier in the thread but never got put on. Next I got some FK rear struts for a Bravo and by then I was (hopefully) ready for some altitude adjustment. Total outlay - about £50

The struts:

Standard ones are the black ones. Wait a minute...

ohnoes.jpg

lol that wont fit then!

The front dampers i had (were off a Marea) would not fit - so I did what any self respecting mechanic would do and carried on regardless.

Since I was going to put the springs on the standard strut I'd better make sure they fit.

Actually this pic only shows the Marea springs (blue) next to my Bravo ones (red) - anyway long story short the pigtails were all wrong (note the presence of the grinder)

chop chop

Had to deal with a slightly stubborn bolt too

grindygrindy.jpg

haha that went well. Didn't sever the brake lines or anything!

then I did the rear - check out these amazing dampers

I swear I have pinched out longer turds than that

Anyway, by the end of the day it was low.

So yeah, pretty much caught up now. The car rides like a Thai ladyboy on a pogo stick and I can't figure out which front struts I need to buy to make it ride better. I imagine some trial and error will be involved. Anyway, it's fun to drive around in and makes people smile so happy days.

I'll leave you with a picture of my Dash Monkey

Cheerio

haha yeah they would look pretty cool but would just about cost me more than i've spent on the entire car so far!

Got some new wheels last week, the tyres were advertised as having 4mm tread but they have 2mm or less and are very cracked and completely illegal. Frikken Ebay douchebags

Anyway, looks like I'm in the market for some partworns and a few rattlecans.

In other news I have raised the car back up. Yeah I know I'm weak but I enjoy actually driving it as opposed to just mincing around and pussyfooting over speedbumps etc. Now I can actually enjoy driving it again :D

I have raised the car back up.

Sorry about this guys... I'm working on a solution involving a combination of ride comfort and lower altitude.

In the meantime here is a pic of the new wheels. It's not a great one, I was parked on a hill and I think the suspension is compressed on the other side. I'm sure it usually sits a bit lower than this, but anyway, the Zenders:

Not much to report, but I thought I'd add this update while I could be arsed. Chucked the knackered old front splitter on yesterday evening, I had pulled over when it got ripped of during my low phase and ran back to pick it up. It'd been sitting in the garage waiting to go back on and I had the car up on the jack anyway so I threw it back on. I had missed the scraping noise when going over bumps :D

The reason it was on the jack was cause I was fitting some spacers I won on a well known auction site. I have had 20mm ones on the back since I got the car and the front was in need of some too but I could never justify the cost. Anyway, some bargainous 15mm jobbies have sorted out that lost-in-the-arches look - considering how much arch gap there still is!

Thats it for now, next on the list is probably some front coilovers if I can ever sort some. I think I'll be adapting some standard struts at this rate. Also, if anyone has a bonnet lying around let me know, I'm thinking of replacing this one. Cheers.

Cheers bud, yeah it's definitely a tight budget! I do wish it wasn't but it makes it more of a challenge and a longer term thing this way. If I was minted it'd have a brown leather interior and air ride and then I'd get bored and buy something else!

How much have to spent on it so far if you don't mind me asking?

I'd rather not think about it!

Difficult to say precisely - and very scary to add up - but my guess is about £16-1700 all in.

Bear in mind the car was only on 35k when i bought it and that also includes quite a bit of stuff; 4 different struts (2 that didnt fit) and 6 springs, the TCAs, droplinks, THREE sets of wheels and tyres(!), 4 spacers, brake discs and pads, the towbar i've not fitted yet etc etc. I'm probably forgetting a few things there too.

oh yeah and the paintjob was £27 :D

I imagine you could get the base car for quite a bit less now, especially if you're not worried about the milage.

Looks good for a £27 jobby.

Faded anywhere yet?

nah no fading, it has flaked off where I've dented the car though! The front bumper is pretty bad, about a quarter of it is black but in fairness it's like that because I drove into the back of a 206!

In all honesty the paint itself was £27, then it was £8 for the satin black, about £5 for rollers, trays, sandpaper etc and another £10 for a huge vat of thinner I still have half of. In fact i still have most of the paint! So technically £50 but it would do 2+ cars.

Thankfully the standard turquoise paint has gone with the new stuff when it's come off, so the turquoise is still only visible in the engine bay and a few small spots in the door shuts. I might spend a day touching it up at some point but life is too short and time is expensive at the moment.

I love this car. :)
Your pictures on Retro Rides were one of the things that convinced me that a Multipla could be cool. I'm collecting my one on Saturday. :)

It's a high milage example, and the bonnet is quite stone-chipped. I don't have any pictures of it that I can photoshop yet, but I'm considering some sort of wrap on the bonnet. Maybe a carbon one (and the wing mirrors maybe, and then some of the interior maybe) :). It might look quite rediculous though, so I'll wait 'til I can photoshop it before buying any vinyl!
Cheers

Cool, well done mate. I would be very careful with the vinyl, fake carbon is very errr well I dont like it on anything, let alone these things. Maybe try wood grain or something? (y)

Firstly I'll see how badly stonechipped the bonnet is (it was quite dirty when I last saw it). The carbon look vinyl might look really rubbish, I was just thinking it might be funny to ape the "my car is so JDM, yo! :slayer:" brigade with their carbon bonnets and luminous wheels, only with a Multipla! Maybe it would just look crap :)! Wood grain would certainly be different, I've seen it on the side of old VWs, but never on a bonnet before. Maybe matt black (paint or vinyl) is the answer - the car is dark blue, so it wouldn't stand out too much.
My wife likes the colour, so I can't go completely mad and turn it gunmetal grey or NATO green like yours (on the other hand, I guess that's better than her not liking the colour!).
I haven't even got it on the driveway yet, so all talk of modifying is jumping the gun somewhat! I'll take some pics when I get it an post them here (and then get photoshopping!)
Cheers
Duncan
