Whilst having a Good Friday drive, spotted a huge Golf Ball in the distance.. so headed directly for it. After a fair few miles I tracked it down and took some pics..

Looking on the net, and asking the old man, I think it's the local airport's radar receiver / sender..

Cool nevertheless.

lmao at website....it has so much info it could be used as a terrorist's tool!

Good pictures. I like pictures of weird non-day to day objects.

One is near to my old school (ex-regional command centre) but can't find any pictures.

Hmm, when I was a kid, when my Grandad took us to Blackpool, I'm sure we went past some... He used to show us them...

Oh Christ, I've seen the ones near Whitby too, I have one of the Punto near them too.. strange.

Amusing disclamier on that site: "Disclaimer: This website is for reading on a lazy Sunday afternoon whilst eating cucumber sandwiches cut into triangles and having a pot of earl grey tea"

That "recipe" is about as much use as my butt for disabling a radar station! :D

Theres always Menwith Hill in the NE...

Actively used by the USAF as a listening station for the ECHELON Programme
<prepares to slip out un-noticed>

I have been to fylingdales during my time in the RAF. Was speaking to a Techie that works there, apparently the Golf balls are to Stop wildlife wandering too close to the Radars and Cooking themselves. Nice :D

**************sorry im having a bit of silly moment... **************
lol @ the Camouflage... wouldnt it be cool if they painted cartoon type clouds on the planes instaead of that! :p lmao

I love the vulcan. It has to be the most beautifully shaped plane ever created. OK the shape doesn't lend itself particularly well to flight but the lines are just wow.....This pisses my Grandfather off as he worked on one of the other V-bombers; the Valiant (the only British plane to have dropped a nuclear weapon) which never looked as good!

That camo is known as "well, we're not sure if the plane will be used for high level or low level bombing so lets use a mixture of both colour schemes :D"

There was one on sale on ebay a couple of months ago - a "Gate Guard" that hadn't flown for years. Would have made a great talking point in the front garden of your student digs, paul ;)

You also get loads of Free the world Lefty types that protest around the Base. They fail to realise that Fylingdales provides the UK with a secure Early warning system against nuclear attack. Peace man :D

Yeah I think I saw it, I remember it being on the local news (maybe?) that a pub owner bought it?

It would probably get a big piece of paper on it "PLEASE REMOVE OR ALL RESIDENTS WILL BE CHARGED FOR REMOVAL" - that's what normally happens with cold war planes left outside :(

Moments after the photo was taken, a tank rolled through  ;)

Paul what they don't mention is the CCTV guided missiles that they can launch ;)
