Uno 1993 Uno MKII - punto 1242cc conversion - MALTA.

Introduction

I've had this UNO for 11 years, and over the years I have added a lot of unique mods to this car...

Recently however I did a full brake, suspension and engine upgrade;

here are some pics :p
Its really good job.Your car is looking very nicely. I own a 1.0 i.e. Would like to keep it in good finishing. unfortunately here it's difficult to find out even essential spares. Do you freely having spares there?
would like to see more photos of your pretty car,
keep it up
cheers

Unfortunately parts are becoming scarce ... Mechanical parts are not an issue but body parts especially the ones for RHD models are quite hard to find.

Having said that I have a good stock of parts probably enough to last me an other 10 years :)... Then it will be the end of the Uno :(

I am currently restoring my old Uno 45. I was wondering if I could plonk in the 1.2 or 1.6 engines from the Palio. Has anyone tried it out? Also will 185/60/R14 tyres on alloys fit without any modifications.

Any Fire engine and Gearbox in any combination will fit down to the mounts and all.

The 1.6L engine is not Fire...Its the same modular engine fitted to the bravo range so it will fit but it has different mounts etc.

185x60x14 should fit fine, I have 195x45R15's on my car and lowered suspension. No problems.

Brakes from the brava family will fit with minor mods as well.

Hope this helps

What about the 1581 engine from Punto 90ELX? I have one available right now - i could bring it in my suitcase to Goa for my Xmas holiday! This is basically a long-stroke 128/Uno engine, with MPI, and in the Punto that Uno-type block is coupled to a Punto-type gearbox which has a different bellhousing.

That looks like a lampredi block, as fitted to the uno turbo / punto GT yes that kind of block will fit but you need the uno turbo mounts and gearbox / half shafts...

Great this thread has come back to life, as my Uno is now SORNd, I have all the bits for a full sups steering and brake o/haul and am plotting a mk.2 Punto ELX85/Sporting engine and Punto-type gearbox.

The attraction of the latter wd be fuel consumption I can live with for the next 6yrs say, until all-electric really comes in. In a Punto it's nom 45mpg combined - in a lightweight Uno that shd be 50mpg at least. But that means the full MPI, CPU etc and all the faff of rewiring, coding etc. It also means settling for 80bhp, softer in fact than the mk.1 ELX85/Sporting. That shd still be interesting, as the standard 70SX is v lively already, but only gets 35mpg at best.

But it's interesting that a carb on a ELX75 motor (like my old blue one) liberates so much power, without the electronic complications. I already have a brand new 34/34DMTR, so that cd be a quick interim installation, jetted up as advised by Hyperdart above.

So thanks - great thread.

Yes, but easier than that - it's like that fitted to ordinary pre-FIRE Unos. With that engine coupled to a Punto 90ELX gearbox, your Uno/FIRE gearbox mounts (2) and halfshafts that you already have (I think?) will do, and you only need to get the one Uno/Lampredi engine mount.

But the Punto box, intended for 14" wheels, will give rather low gearing in a Uno with 13" wheels.

You just need a mount on the Right hand side on the inner mudguard, for which you should have holes pre threaded in your uno chassis....

I've only seen the lampredis as fitted on the 55/60 pre 89 uno....whilst the one in the picture seems to have the same intake manifold as the 1372 turbo...

Hi, have you got any pictures on how you modified the inlet manifold as i am after doing the same thing. Did you have to make up a spacer/adapter plate to get it to fit?

So basically the following mods need to be carried out to the manifold. (Sorry i do not have pictures at this time)

1st Thread and blank out 3 out of 4 injector holes
2nd Remove the brake vacuum line connector, blank it out (coz it wont fit coz of the firewall) and relocate the connection to one of the injector holes. You will need an elbow with a thread on one side, it should be free to swivel and has a push fit fitting on the other side. These can be bought from shops selling compressed air and pneumatic fittings.

3rd Buy or manufacture an adapter plate to fit the weber to a single large port on the manifold. I used 3 pieces of 5mm galvanised flat bar. I basically cut the botton bar to fit the manifold, the top bar to fit the carb and the middle one to act as a transition. Then sealed the 'sandwich' adapter with instant gasket and bolted everything together... I will try to take a photo and upload to make things more clear... yes there are also ready made adapters!
