Seicento Shoebox, 1.2 16v Seicento.

Introduction

Been telling myself if would make a MM thread for a while now, so here goes.

My little Cento started life as a 2002 Seicento SX

I have to admit that i actually wasnt impressed with it when i first saw it, always thinking these little gay italian cars were for old people or women. (definatley not what i think now though)
Went for a test drive and... well i actually had some fun. Not what i was expecting out this little car.

Here it is on the day i took it for a test drive; nothing like a quick zip down some country lanes.

Well i duly bought the car and have never looked back.

Sure it might have pretty slow and crappy but i was having fun. All the car needed was a name...
The Shoebox

First things first, some slightly bigger tyres would may be a good idea.
Seriously, go look at standard steelies on a Sei; they're so thin its scary.

Standard Sporting Alloys, always a good choice (y) Plus the price i got them for, i couldnt complain.

I remember a mate of mine telling me about induction kits. Quick old browse of ebay and i'd ordered myself a shiny K&N.
(bear in mind these photos are a few years old and i ive seen the error of my ways and found the fiat forum)

Racing!

Sad to say thats how the car stayed for a few months.
During that time fraid it got into 2 nasty accidents.
1. My mate fell into the rear nearside pannel, big old dent in the side. Speak to a friendly bodyshop i know. £30 and its now just a slight crease in the side.
2. This was alot worse. Pretty sure someone ran into me on the ice two years ago. Front bumper dented, bonnet creased, chasis bar bent.
Again a trip to a friendly bodyshop, full respray of front bumper and bonnet, plus dents all taken out. :)

A trip to see my brother and i came back with a nice shiny supersprint backbox, only trouble it was made for a cinq.
Trip to the garage, one sleeve fitted and new exhaust goodness was on!

Looking Pretty High.

(click for high res)
Not so high now, was just messing about on photoshop.

Now, if anyone has seen me at shows this year and wondered why my offside is a nice shiny colour red compared to my nearside, here's why.
Was driving down a one way street near my house following a van. Saw him indicate into a space infront of him. Suddenly whips it into reverse and tries to parallel park next to me. Though there was a space in front of him.
My car got scraped dow its right hand side: Front wing, door, and rear pannel.
It was totally the guys fault and he admitted it, details swapped and he wanted to settle outside of insurance as it was a work van.
Down the bodyshop again and side all repaired and resprayed, only hard part was trying to get the other guy to pay. (thats another story though)

After the exhaust had been fitted i knew what i wanted next; an abarth body kit and sporting bumpers.
Browsed fleabay for a couple of months and managed to find myself a bargain. One sporting rear bumper in red, cracked and slightly damaged... £10. Bargain.

Another find came up on ebay only a few weeks later, abarth sideskirts and spoiler. Unused and primed. Bought both for £45.

Once again to the body shop to get everything repaired, resprayed and fitted. Thought it would be easier to get everything done in one go.
Only trouble was the exhaust didnt fit correctly into sporting bumper. Quick trip to the garage down the road, fired up the gas cutter and it fitted perfectly. (did have a picture of this being done but cant find it atm)

Looking pretty snazzy.

After seeing a cento parked up in my town with red and black seats, i went on the hunt. Few months went by and i checked ebay every week.
Finally a full interior (minus one door card) came up for sale for only £35.
Time to strip it and put the new seats in.

Looking good, just one problem.

Drop a message to Jiminwatford and one doorcard came by way (thanks again jim)

By this point i had been a member on here for quick a while, just never posted anything. Well until the day this box arrived.

My cat surveying the contents.

Biggest farce ever; i had accidently bought the cinq kit. Tried to fit it but obviously it didnt fit. Quick thread on FF and i realised my mistake.
Then came the fun of trying to send it back and get the Sei kit. Messages were sent back and forth, boxes sent back and forth.
I cant complain really Toyosports/Tuningpartsbay were great and didnt have a problem with me sending anything back.

Finally got round to fitting it with the right parts.

Not long after that, finally the main part i wanted cropped up right here in the classifieds; Abarth Alloys and in white too (bonus) from a guy named Todger.

Went over and saw him (note never let your girlfriend map read, so far it hasnt ended well) got there eventually.

Transporting things cento style.

I had read the car should be lowered before 14"s are fitted but im impatient, so over to my brothers to see if the wheels would fit.

In the garage.

However turned out that fiat produced the abarth model with 10mm spacers on the front and with stud conversion. Was not happy.
Back on ebay;spacers ordered & longer bolts ordered.
Meanwhile the wheels went off to the bodyshop for a refurb/respray.

Back from the shop with a fresh coat of powder.

Thought it was time to start looking at getting it lowered. Ordered myself a set of Apex -30mm for the SX (should really of gone with the sporting springs) and some KYB shocks.

Shocks fresh out the box.

So it was down the garage to replace the springs and shocks.
New 14" tryes arrived, SONAR - Top Quality S**T but all that budget would allow.
Time to roll over to my brothers and get the new wheels on.
There was only one problem.... Though the front wheels fitted fine with their new spacers and bolts, the rear's didnt fit with the standard SX bolts and 3mm spacers. So i got to drive my car home like this:

Rear bolts order, trolley jack out and it was white wheels all round :D

Postman arrived again in the next week or so and i recieved a shiny red brace.

While fitting the brace i shined up the rocker cover id managed to get off Todger.

Ooo Shiny...

Finally time to throw it all in the bay and clean the car up a little.

The Current Bay. (note the cable tie holding expansion tank to strut brace)

All finished just in time for show season and time to kick it off with Stanford, which i showed with FF (thanks guys)

Next Month a short drive up north to see Chatsworth House and MIT Car 2010:

Left to right: Emm's 1.2 Turbo, Chalky 1.2 16v & The Shoebox

Gaydon 2010

Was only planning on one more show for the year, Trax 2010 at Silverstone.

Also got the chance to do a 0-60 timed run there:
I got the time of........

N/A. Only made it upto 53mph :p
Speedo inaccurate as hell and clutch about died. Was good fun though.

Thats how it looks today :)

Its pretty loud, a little low & still very slow.

Ok cheers, for sticking with me guys. Next post will be modifications and parts ive got in store for it.
TBs, Cams & engines etc.

Tell me what you think?

Cheers

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Ah that last post was a right essay so ill try and keep it a little shorter this time.
was speaking to Todger about engine swaps and i thought a 1242 8v was the way to go and Todger still had the bottom end that was in Chalky before the 16v was dropped in.

The lump thrown in the boot and wrapped in plenty of plastic.

Always keep a little trolley/sack barrow handy, might need it any time.

Took the 'engine' too be looked at.
Conclusion, its shagged. Well it could be repaired but would probably cost about £500.
Not worth it.

By this point though i'd already started sourcing parts for the idea that i was going to have a mix and match 1242 bottom end and 1108 head.

PGT front calipers, currently brushed back to shiny(er) stuff and waiting for a lick of red paint.

P75 866 Cam. Courtesy of Ming.
Was going to fit this straight away and although i do own a set of feeler gauges, im not confident enough to do it myself. Rather someone else did so if it went wrong...
So anyway went down the garage and asked someone to have a look for us. Quote for fitting the cam: £130.
No thanks.

Larger TB and PGT rear calipers turned up.
Calipers still need to be brushed back before being painted.

Had a crack swapping the TBs over but the mount plate needs to be reshaped to allow throttle cable to be attacted to the TB properly.
New braided brakelines are sat in there box as well waiting for the new year to be started.

Well the 1.2 8v is an old idea and after going in chalky i think a 1242 16v would be the way to go.

So just getting hold of the engine and should be ready start the swap; new engine, new calipers & discs, brake lines, de-wiper rear, de-badge.

So watch this space, should be starting next phase in new year.

Cheers

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

With rear if you not got nay yet, get some 80cm hoses made up, so you oculd replace the small rubber and the hard pipe with one long piece of bradied hoses. Easier to maintain and looks good :).

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Looks good, but fan of these little cars. Always see some cracking example of them on FF. Well done, be proud.

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Well after deciding against a 1.2 8v i began trying to find a decent 1.2 16v stilo engine. Looking for an engine with under 40k miles for a decent price was pretty hard though.

Eventually found one on fleaBay though; '04 engine with 27k miles.
Took it over to Todger's Bodgers and the fun commenced.

Engine is up on a stand and just waiting for me to order all the other bits to do the rest of the car.

IMG_02093.JPG

Full set of StrongFlex bushes and Engine mounts.
Mtech Drilled and Grooved for the front, plain Brembo discs for the rear.
New brake piping
Seal kit for PGT calipers.

Things still left to order:
HT Leads
Brake Pads - Green Stuff for the front, EBC Ultimax for the rear
Service Parts

Exhaust mani has been ordered and should be here by the end of the week, ordered a John Ashley stainless one after reading this thread.

Still need to wirebrush down the block and sump and give it a fresh lick of paint. Other than that, i just need to wait for everything to arrive and then start work on swap.

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

hi there . awesome project , i will be following this , whats involved with the 1.2 16v swap ?

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Small update.
Nothing new to add really, parts are all sat in my garage waiting until i have some time off in May to get the swap under way. Hoping to get it all ready for Mod Nats, definatley be ready for Stanford though.

Driving over to Todgers and my clutch cable snapped right on the middle of a busy roundabout. Second time its happended now, luckily managed to find a bit of floor to sleep on and round to local motor factors in the morning to grab a new clutch cable.

IMG_02572.JPG

I know my clutch is on its way out, dont think previous owner ever changed it but since new block will be in soon, with a shiny Stilo clutch im not fussed about it.

Went down to a local machine shop.
IMG_0328.JPG

Had about 2.5kgs taken off (though i need to pop it on some more accurate scales)

Exhaust manifold finally arrived from JA. Quality is alot better than the first one they sent me but think i may have a few problems.

From the flange, before it bends initially, needs to be an inch or so shorter? Looking at it we dont reckon itll fit in the bay?

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Well The car is at my house, and in 24 hours work is well under way.

For how new this one is compared to mine I was quite suprised at how much corrosion has already taken place. Chalky wasn't as bad as this but atleast there isn't any holes or welding that is required.

The car delivered to me

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Yeh work is finally well under way, with a big thankyou to Todger for sorting it out for me.
Due to work commitments and where i currently live i dont have enough time or space to do the conversion. As the insurance was up for renewal and i didnt want to make a new policy only to cancel it and renew it with all the new mods listed, i asked Todger to do it for me.
Ill be over at the weekend and hopefully get plenty of pictures and clean down/paint the engine. Not going to tell you guys on the colour choices ive got in mind, dont think many will like it.

For how new this one is compared to mine I was quite suprised at how much corrosion has already taken place.
Its only a year younger than Chalky is.
Im quite surprised actually, i know there was some corrosion underneath on the rear, didnt think it would be that bad though. The car is dry stored in a garage for about 75% of the time. Even got the boiler in the garage to keep it warm.
Then again the rust could of been worse, especially for a 9 year old car.

Main stuff to order is just service parts and its go time!

Picutre of the majority of the bits for a 1.2 16v conversion.

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

I'm putting it down to it being stored to be honest. Taken from a rainy day inside the garage where it's warm could be accelerating it slightly.

I think towards the end of the line they started to get lazy, same with the cinqs aswell.

Quite a few "loose" bolts (by that I mean not torque'd up properly), alot of critical ones too. I'm putting that down to laziness on fiat's behalf.

Thanks

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

you really are starting a conversion business todger! lol
I dunno how you would even start to price something like this up, i suppose once you done a fwe though you know whats involved...

Cool little car anyways, i think you should leave the front bumper as is, it not having a sporting front bumper makes it that bit different - looks as though you can get more air through the front as well..

Also, amazing how much difference painting the wheels white does, my sei is red with anthracite abarth wheels and your wheels look Soooo much bigger than mine (in pics at least) - i still prefer mine though :p

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

still pretty shocking going to undo a rear beam to chassis bolt and its pretty loose then going to a swing arm nut that is steaming as it comes off :p

pretty tidy under the car but not the best for the age and mid section looks to be a big restriction tbh

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Yes, done it to pretty much all of the arm bolts. Even undoing them slowly They just burnt the WD off. Crazy. Note for anyone else this happens too, don't stop. They will seize :D.

Rear beam is painted up and almost ready to go back on, Just waiting on a few more parts to get the hoses and pipes into position. Need to wirebrush and underseal it all up first though.

Thanks
