Seicento Shoebox, 1.2 16v Seicento.

Introduction

Been telling myself if would make a MM thread for a while now, so here goes.

My little Cento started life as a 2002 Seicento SX

I have to admit that i actually wasnt impressed with it when i first saw it, always thinking these little gay italian cars were for old people or women. (definatley not what i think now though)
Went for a test drive and... well i actually had some fun. Not what i was expecting out this little car.

Here it is on the day i took it for a test drive; nothing like a quick zip down some country lanes.

Well i duly bought the car and have never looked back.

Sure it might have pretty slow and crappy but i was having fun. All the car needed was a name...
The Shoebox

First things first, some slightly bigger tyres would may be a good idea.
Seriously, go look at standard steelies on a Sei; they're so thin its scary.

Standard Sporting Alloys, always a good choice (y) Plus the price i got them for, i couldnt complain.

I remember a mate of mine telling me about induction kits. Quick old browse of ebay and i'd ordered myself a shiny K&N.
(bear in mind these photos are a few years old and i ive seen the error of my ways and found the fiat forum)

Racing!

Sad to say thats how the car stayed for a few months.
During that time fraid it got into 2 nasty accidents.
1. My mate fell into the rear nearside pannel, big old dent in the side. Speak to a friendly bodyshop i know. £30 and its now just a slight crease in the side.
2. This was alot worse. Pretty sure someone ran into me on the ice two years ago. Front bumper dented, bonnet creased, chasis bar bent.
Again a trip to a friendly bodyshop, full respray of front bumper and bonnet, plus dents all taken out. :)

A trip to see my brother and i came back with a nice shiny supersprint backbox, only trouble it was made for a cinq.
Trip to the garage, one sleeve fitted and new exhaust goodness was on!

Looking Pretty High.

(click for high res)
Not so high now, was just messing about on photoshop.

Now, if anyone has seen me at shows this year and wondered why my offside is a nice shiny colour red compared to my nearside, here's why.
Was driving down a one way street near my house following a van. Saw him indicate into a space infront of him. Suddenly whips it into reverse and tries to parallel park next to me. Though there was a space in front of him.
My car got scraped dow its right hand side: Front wing, door, and rear pannel.
It was totally the guys fault and he admitted it, details swapped and he wanted to settle outside of insurance as it was a work van.
Down the bodyshop again and side all repaired and resprayed, only hard part was trying to get the other guy to pay. (thats another story though)

After the exhaust had been fitted i knew what i wanted next; an abarth body kit and sporting bumpers.
Browsed fleabay for a couple of months and managed to find myself a bargain. One sporting rear bumper in red, cracked and slightly damaged... £10. Bargain.

Another find came up on ebay only a few weeks later, abarth sideskirts and spoiler. Unused and primed. Bought both for £45.

Once again to the body shop to get everything repaired, resprayed and fitted. Thought it would be easier to get everything done in one go.
Only trouble was the exhaust didnt fit correctly into sporting bumper. Quick trip to the garage down the road, fired up the gas cutter and it fitted perfectly. (did have a picture of this being done but cant find it atm)

Looking pretty snazzy.

After seeing a cento parked up in my town with red and black seats, i went on the hunt. Few months went by and i checked ebay every week.
Finally a full interior (minus one door card) came up for sale for only £35.
Time to strip it and put the new seats in.

Looking good, just one problem.

Drop a message to Jiminwatford and one doorcard came by way (thanks again jim)

By this point i had been a member on here for quick a while, just never posted anything. Well until the day this box arrived.

My cat surveying the contents.

Biggest farce ever; i had accidently bought the cinq kit. Tried to fit it but obviously it didnt fit. Quick thread on FF and i realised my mistake.
Then came the fun of trying to send it back and get the Sei kit. Messages were sent back and forth, boxes sent back and forth.
I cant complain really Toyosports/Tuningpartsbay were great and didnt have a problem with me sending anything back.

Finally got round to fitting it with the right parts.

Not long after that, finally the main part i wanted cropped up right here in the classifieds; Abarth Alloys and in white too (bonus) from a guy named Todger.

Went over and saw him (note never let your girlfriend map read, so far it hasnt ended well) got there eventually.

Transporting things cento style.

I had read the car should be lowered before 14"s are fitted but im impatient, so over to my brothers to see if the wheels would fit.

In the garage.

However turned out that fiat produced the abarth model with 10mm spacers on the front and with stud conversion. Was not happy.
Back on ebay;spacers ordered & longer bolts ordered.
Meanwhile the wheels went off to the bodyshop for a refurb/respray.

Back from the shop with a fresh coat of powder.

Thought it was time to start looking at getting it lowered. Ordered myself a set of Apex -30mm for the SX (should really of gone with the sporting springs) and some KYB shocks.

Shocks fresh out the box.

So it was down the garage to replace the springs and shocks.
New 14" tryes arrived, SONAR - Top Quality S**T but all that budget would allow.
Time to roll over to my brothers and get the new wheels on.
There was only one problem.... Though the front wheels fitted fine with their new spacers and bolts, the rear's didnt fit with the standard SX bolts and 3mm spacers. So i got to drive my car home like this:

Rear bolts order, trolley jack out and it was white wheels all round :D

Postman arrived again in the next week or so and i recieved a shiny red brace.

While fitting the brace i shined up the rocker cover id managed to get off Todger.

Ooo Shiny...

Finally time to throw it all in the bay and clean the car up a little.

The Current Bay. (note the cable tie holding expansion tank to strut brace)

All finished just in time for show season and time to kick it off with Stanford, which i showed with FF (thanks guys)

Next Month a short drive up north to see Chatsworth House and MIT Car 2010:

Left to right: Emm's 1.2 Turbo, Chalky 1.2 16v & The Shoebox

Gaydon 2010

Was only planning on one more show for the year, Trax 2010 at Silverstone.

Also got the chance to do a 0-60 timed run there:
I got the time of........

N/A. Only made it upto 53mph :p
Speedo inaccurate as hell and clutch about died. Was good fun though.

Thats how it looks today :)

Its pretty loud, a little low & still very slow.

Ok cheers, for sticking with me guys. Next post will be modifications and parts ive got in store for it.
TBs, Cams & engines etc.

Tell me what you think?

Cheers

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Wish chalky got that kind of response :D.

There will be another one on the stand in june from my "workshop", that doesn't belong to me aswell.

As mentioned, literally teething problems now. Will be running sweet as a nut for the run in period. After that there will no doubt be discussions about management, and loom building.

Just glad that it is finally putting a smile on your face again bud (y)

Thanks

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Awesome stuff, reading all of this makes me somewhat sad that currently i'm building up only my original 1108 lump (new headgasket, 866 cam, 38mm TB), so im pretty damn jealous.

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

What date is Stanford this year? I wanna try and make it this year in either the GT3 or SeiT.

You just building 1.4 16v centos for a living now then?? lol

Ah that's where it all starts though.
Then someone will ask you if you want to take their car round a track and youll feel the difference and want one. Well thats happened to me after i drove chalky.

What date is Stanford this year?
Sunday 3rd June.
Same weekend as Mod Nats though, which means i'll probably stay at mod nats saturday night and cruise to Stanford sometime on sunday.
Todger if you decide to convoy back with me that means you get to take Pirus' Secret Shortcut ®, not available on any sat nav. :D

18FD ECU on the bay for around £35.
Assuming i dont bugger up the wiring and swap the pins on the connectors so theyre the right way round, by following the pinouts in this thread, it should run alright? Well atleast until i start sorting MS.

No doubt, i've driven some more powerfull italian metal before (a 155bhp and a 135bhp alfa mito), so i'd drop an abarth SS block in there yesterday if i had the money/skills.

Currently working on getting it running with a slightly beefed up 1108, and if i can get the funds (have to sort out bigger brakes, wheels, suspension as well if i want to get it properly quick), i might attempt an engineswap next winter.

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

once upon a time i took someone to pick up a turbo cinq, as soon as i had been in one i knew i had to have one lol.

Lol, i've had a short ridealong in a cinq with a 1.2 8v making approx 90hp (bike ITBs, megasquirt, stainless spaghetti manifold), so i know how you feel.

If only the novitec turbo kit was still readily available.. i'd be saving up for it.

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

i never seen a novitec turbo in the flesh - not sure if i ever seen a UK one online for that matter. (could only be better than Van Aakens attempts really tbf)

I'm positive a 1.4 16v NA would hammer my turbo round a track purely because its a tricky little bugger. Out and out speed, a turbo should win on the extra torque but it would always come down to actual car specs and drivers i reckon - wouldn't be much in it though i don't think.

I just love forced induction, its life enriching stuff!

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

It's interesting that only with the 1.4 16v cars (and, more recently, Craig's tub) have we seen the suspension, handling, etc. getting the attention it surely needed in the turbo cars. With a flatter torque curve they might just be controllable (and faster).

Just been reading a review of the Ducati Panigale. 195bhp in something like 200kg wet. Top speed somewhere in excess of 190mph. The reviewer says he'd never turn the traction control off with anything less than slicks on the thing....................

Re: The Shoebox. Then, Now & the Future

Could this thread now be renamed Shoebox, 1.2 16v Seicento, thanks.

Ok car has been back to the exhaust place and got the lamba boss welded in the right place this time, no charge but had to wait around 3 hours.

IMG_1418.jpg

Also adjusted the handbrake cable, as the adjuster seemed to have shaken itself loose.

Put the lamba probe in the correct hole (post cat) but was still getting a flashing engine light. Which means emission fault. Only happens once i hit the loud pedal over about 3k rpm.

Went to get the codes read, incase they were still causing a fault and causing it to throw up the emission fault.
Same codes as before:
P0300 - Generic Ignition Failure x2.
P0141 - O2 Sensor after cat.
P0340 - Camshaft sensor.
Got them cleared while i was there.

Found this post by Kris and this post by Todger. So I have just disconnected the cam sensor for now. Hopefully that should stop P0300 and P0340.

To try and stop the lamba after cat throwing up a fault, i did as Kris suggested and removed the rear lamba, kept it plugged in and wrapped it in some tin foil and put a spare blanking plug on the lamba boss.
Still no change, even with the rear one removed, if i put my foot down the engine light flashes.
Took out the lambas and swapped for another set ive borrowed off Todger. They came out a lovely dark colour. I knew the car was running rich anyway.
Getting roughly 30-33mpg at the moment.

Engine light has come back on as well now, though i think in part that was my fault when swapping the lambas over i unplugged the speedo sensor and plugged in a lamba sensor instead. So im not surprised :p

Any ideas or suggestions to sort this out, or is it just the ECU cannot adapt?
As ive said before im already saving up my money and am looking at building a MS system in the summer.
Still tempted by trying to repin an 18FD ECU, cheaper in the short term and i dont mind messing around with the wiring. Just wondering if someone can confirm if it should work (in theory).

Otherwise, the car is good fun and looking alot better, now ive given it a clean.
IMG_14451.jpg

I know its a bit of a rainbow under the engine bay at the moment, that should be sorted this weekend (hopefully).

Pulled into a car park near a local leisure centre as i thought i heard it misfiring and wanted to check the plugs, also thought id swap the lambas over again and see if it would run any better.
This local car park however is often where all the 17/18 year old scrotes park up. So i roll in and i can hear them saying how crap a little Fiat is.
I parked over the otherside and popped the bonnet to swap the sensors.... That shut them up :D
As i go to leave a guy in a Golf pulls out behind me.
I can see him 'giving it bigun' to his mates parked up and they all kept looking at me.

Well needless to say, i couldnt help but wipe that smile from his face....
All within the speed limits and the law.... honest officer
Normally im not so childish at all.

No one needs to say anything, trust me.
I'm ok, battered and bruised but will live.
Just glad i didnt have a passenger.
Hit the white line going round a corner, not speeding or driving like a ****. Diesel and grease on the road, felt the back end start coming round. Oppostie lock and dabbed the brake but went up the verge and hit the wet grass. You can see the rest.
No one stopped to help me, one women came out a house nearby and said i was a boy racer. She didnt like my reply....

Sorry to hear about it. got told earlier on in the day.

Glad to hear that your ok though, thats the main thing. Cars can be replaced.

Its disgusting that no one stopped to check that you were ok. and I dont blame you for your reply to the woman.

Its disgraceful people make assumptions like that. and regardless as to if you were or not. They are the worse people for not checking.
