To a point im sure there is some improvisation involved but you still need a keen eye to pull it together.

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

totally agree

it can be done and look amazing but i have seen it done and it looks s**t lol

its each to there own with the rat look i will just see what happens with mine

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

But there's 'rat' and there's 'rat'. REAL rat is where the bodywork is just naturally weathered, but is in 100% perfect mechanical nick - generally we're talking 30+ year old motors.

To do something 'newer' IMHO then you need to just go 'scabby look'....

Different colour panels, rusty steelies, maybe the odd wing in satin/primer (as you'd get it from a parts place) - basically giving the impression that you haven't looked after your car.

But to pull it off, I reckon you need to have something to take people by suprise - meaning you need stealth power!

No loud exhausts, no shiny bits, no bucket seats, harnesses or cage - just a motor that will leave the competition standing.......

Coolest car I ever saw was an absolute SHED of a Mk1 Golf - and I do mean SHED - at a show at Santa Pod. He pulled up to the strip and no-one gave him a second look, apart from to think what a nail of a car it was.

And then he ran like an 11 second 1/4!

Brilliant!

you're describing a sleeper more than a "rat" style car

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

yeah sleeper is fun, my uno turbo was a sleeper and apart from alfa 14's it looked stock but 240bhpish (dyno'd at 198bhp then a hybrid turbo and race cam were fitted) and i was told around 240 and believe me 0-62 in 5.5 it was faster than anything local to me at the time

i would love to do a sleeper cinq but serious tuning is needed for that so not yet but maybe soon, watch this space lol

Nah - I'm not describing EITHER, TBH.

And I certainly wouldn't call the car in the link a sleeper, not seeing as it's slammed, running alloys, a big exit exhaust and a cage, seats and harnesses.

Rat - old bodywork with natural patina, immaculate mechanics - with or without something meaty under the bonnet (the Golf in my story was over 30 years old and looked every year of it - but naturally....)

Scabby - made to look worse than it perhaps should be - again with something a bit lively under the bonnet (doesn't have to be mad quick - just quick enough to suprise folk from a standing start and then let them go at the speed limit)

Sleeper - completely out of the box standard - or made to look like the lowest spec model in the range - no alloys, no exhaust, no cage, no buckets, no harnesses, no go-faster looking add-ons - nothing.

But the faster the better.......

All this is IMHO, based on seeing a lot of these trends come and go over the past *cough* years......

I suppose we could all get really anal on what the descriptions really are about - but as long as the owner likes it, then who the hell cares what the rest of us think..... (y)

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

Have I read this right? The springs are cut down and secured with tiger-seal, and this car will be scrapped before its next MOT? The first point just sounds dangerous, and the second point sounds like a lot of wasted money. I actually like the car, and am a big fan of non-colour-coded bumpers, but I cannot help feeling that the money would have been better saved for the next car. Get a year's no-claims under your belt and a 1.2 16v Sporting (mk1 or 2) becomes a realistically insurable option.

On the subject of colour-coding the bumpers, I find that this actually slows the car down. When there are parked cars on both sides of the street and you have non-coded bumpers, guess who gives way first. Unfortunately, due to the spec, my next car will have colour-coded bumpers, so I will just have to wait patiently.

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

wide and low yes but Minilites... urgh.. why do people do it? it looks disgusting. they only work with Mini's!

only just read this again...

to be fair, mini lights only really work on minis, volvo 340s, cinquecentos or seicentos. and thats it.

and i have a seicento, and they look mean on minilights ;)

and cheers for the linky :D
did you get all the stickers off ebay?
how much did it cost?

im doing a rat look cinquecento after im finished with the sei / the sei finally dies / i get lots of money on the random :D

i agree, you have to have proper vision to be able to pull off rat look effectively, and i quite fancy my chances ;)
have done a few on Forza 3 on the Xbox (rat look cars), will try and get some pics on here if poss :p

That's what i'm doin.. i'll have a year under my belt. I haven't spent that much on it to worry about. or maybe i have.. i don't even know how much it all cost but it was worth it, the learning experience...the fun of fixin a banger Thanks Fiat :) without spendin money on it I would'nt of gotten into cars so much!
it won't pass it's next MOT is why it's gettin scrapped... or maybe it will? never know! well.. with the springs, it isn't lol.
and i know what i done to the springs is safe
i can't go over 50 otherwise it will be risky... if i there was a massive hole in the ground! but you don't get many holes on motorways anyway. i just try and avoid bumps and manhole covers...

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

Update... diver side engine mount snapped
don't even know when this happened but i only saw it today... engine was leaning over like it had enough
it happened cos i lost a bolt on the top part of the mount some time ago and the bottom part snapped off cos of the forces, i thought the top part just holds the wiring loom
lucky though it didn't fall on the floor...

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

Went over a dead fox on sunday night... was horrible >_<

got caught on the rear silencer...blood all over it and on the bumper! fur too lol. just washed it now

Just realised you like the car
means alot

and i feel i get given way more... by old people.
once this old lady stopped behind this speed bump so i can pass cos of parked cars( I HATE PEOPLE THAT PARK ON SPEEDBUMPS, ILLEGAL AND ANNOYING! -caps)
but i was like "no you go, ta" cos i can't go straight over the speedbump..
hilarious when you get dirty looks when you go over a bump at 45 degrees :ROFLMAO:
especially cos of the front is high atm, people oncoming are like wtf? then see behind and are like "ahhhh... ****" lol

Ahh, you're money is not wasted if you have enjoyed the experience. A mk1 Punto is one of the best first cars to tinker with due to plenty of space to work and relatively simple components. The fact that it presents many little, easy to fix faults is very confidence inspiring. With my Uno, it was 1 spanner jobs on the Haynes difficulty scale but now I will happily take on 3-4 spanner jobs.

Still not convinced it saves me any money. I may be able to do many of the repairs myself, but I am all too aware at the slightest fault, and so fixing things that others would perhaps ignore or be oblivious to costs the difference.

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished

Yeah I agree mk1 Punto (lowest model lol) has been a great car to learn on! i went to the head gasket change when i got the car ( no experience at the time) and it blew twice after... 2 weeks gap between them. then i finally done the job properly after learning why you need to skim the head + repair a rusted head... on the third head gasket job i was like "please don't be puffin white smoke again >_<" and after a long time of checkin it out everyday i was like YAY but had to wait many months till i could afford driving lessons! ok gone a bit off topic here..

i think it does save money. do you go with "don't fix it till it breaks/if it's not broken" ? :D

Re: My Mk1 55s Punto project, finally finished
