Scudo Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary.

Introduction

OK - I hate the term 'surf van' - but this is kind of what this van is going to end up as.

But rather than JUST being that, it's also my daily drive and needs to do all the other stuff that vans are good at - like tip runs!

Anyway - it's a 2002, ex council van with 43k on the clocks - a few light scrapes, but overall in great nick :

Whirly roof thingy is an added bonus to keep the air circulating - especially when I sleep in the van! :

The back originally looked like this :

The ply lining kit was first to go :

Closely followed by the bulkhead - and then a quick clean :

Next to go (for now) was the cab headlining :

roof1.JPG

"Flashband" added to reduce panel vibration (cheap alternative - but effective) - can't beleive there's NO sound deadening at all in these vans! :

roof21.JPG

Foil backed bubble wrap is my first insulation layer - reflects the heat both ways to keep the van cooler in summer and warmer in winter - tried and trusted!

roof3.JPG

Whilst I'm waiting on a full-length rear headlining, I've just added the "Flashband' :

roof4.JPG

Next to come out were the front seats (with one bolt taking longer than the rest combined, in true DIY style) :

cabfloor1.JPG

With the floor up, more "Flashband" applied :

cabfloor2.JPG

And finally given a good clean :

cabfloor3.JPG

That's about all for now. I'm waiting on some rear plastics out of a combi, plus the rear headlining.

Once the van is fully "Flashbanded" and insulated, I'll start with the cosmetics.

The headlining (front and back) will be getting a complete re-trim in something bright.

The plastics will either be getting just a good clean, painted or re-trimmed, depending on how good they are.

The remaining metalwork will be getting fully carpeted.

A ply floor will be going back in, covered in black Altro flooring and I'll be making a rear-facing seat / storage box that converts into a bed.

I'll add to this thread as I get things done........ :slayer:

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

this may sound like a stupid question but do they do a lowering kit for one of these as it would look fantastic on its bum on a set of 17's lol

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

Was looking at lowering it - but at £140 for even the cheap springs, I don't think I'll bother....(n)

If I do try it, I mikght just get a spare set of springs from a scrapper and cut them to see what the look/feel is like and then makle a decision......

Alloys I've got are only 15s from an Alfa, so I can use the load rated tyres I've already got - going to refurb them Anthracite though....

Don't want to alter it TOO much on the outside - but I've got some vinyl hibiscus flowers coming to cover the bonnet and make a more subtle design around the back doors....... :)

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

Not much to report, I'm afraid - busy with a mix of work and uni stuff - but I've sorted out the bonnet and begun to refurb the alloys!

The bonnet is just a collection of Hibiscus flowers in vinyl stuck on to make a 'bonnet wrap' type of thing.....it covers the scatches and dings if nothing else and fits in with the theme of the inside.

I wish I'd got a close up of the alloys before the refurb, but I forgot - so here they are after a very quick rub down.

You can see from the closeup of the worst one that there's some filling to be done - but it's not too bad and most of the surface scratches came out easily during the rubbbiing down.

Some filler, primer, etc and anthracite top coat (suitably laquered) will do the trick just nicely, I reckon.

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

i love the bonnet, it makes mine look sane lol

keep up the good work, i love the fact your not scared to be different lol

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

looking awesome, going extremely quickly aswell!

i must agree with blu, maybe would look good if you cut out the fins, black mesh it, and then take the fiat bit out, and replace it with one of your flowers?
so it would be the fiat circle, with the blue innards, but rather than actually saying FIAT it has one of those flowerrs?

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

That's quite spooky - as I've already enquired about an embossed 'hibiscus' emblem to cover the Fiat badge from a guy off E Bay - and another 4 similar embossed centre caps for the wheels!

And the mesh thing - I'd already thought about changing the lower part of the grill, seeing as they're a bit warped........

Anyway - we'll see what happens, but in the meantime, we've just come into a touch of cash, so here's what's on the agenda :

New head unit - needs to be bluetooth (for my phone) and USB (for my tunes - don't own an Ipod or any of that technology ********) - so here's one I'm thinking fits the bill nicely ......

To compliment the Vibe components, a sub that also has a 2 channel amp in it - not the best, but a good combo of what I need.......

The interior will be getting finished as soon as time allows - and the ECU is getting sent off for a postal remap from a guy that specialises in van remaps.

Won't be staggering figures, but you're looking at 130+ bhp (means nowt) and, more importantly, about 30% increase in torque - which WILL make a difference! :slayer:

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

Haha, one of the cooler threads I've seen. Keep it up.

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

Just to say that the van is still an ongoing thing.

Latest aqcuisitions are a pair of ex-Police side doors (which are fitted with tinted windows that fit more flush to the metalwork than the taxi version) and the ICE I mentioned earlier.

The alloys are mid refurb, so pics at some point will follow.

Still toying with the remap and maybe even going a touch lower to help with the body roll......

Anyway - back soon with an update, I promise..... :slayer:

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

OK - as promised, a quick update...

First the wheels - here's a couple of pics of the very worst one, looking FAR better now.....

Has been etch primed, filled and then primed again - now waiting for a dry day or two to put the top coat on and laquer them....

alloyrefurb3.JPG

alloyrefurb4.JPG

Now - big job of the day (took me ages, as I did it all singlehandedly, which was a faff!) - fitting the doors!

They're not perfect, but came in far cheaper than having a pair of windows fitted to my existing doors (which I can now flog on E Bay and recoup even more dosh for...)

After a quick T-Cut and clean up, here's one ready to fit :

side_door_1.JPG

Old door off - big hole to fill :

side_door_2.JPG

Door in place, lots of adjustments to get it perfectly square - and here you go :

The 'finished' result :

:)

More to come soon.............

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

Looking good.

Whats that sticker on the rear quater? Do you plan to colour code the bumpers?

Ah - you spotted it/them..... it's actually a few more of the hibiscus flowers working their way round the back quarter. I've not finished that bit yet, hence not taken a piccy.(y)

As for colour-coding - I've toyed with the idea, but I think I'll just end up keeping them grey/black, as it's already a big area of white. If I end up putting any colour on them, it'd be the bottom half only.....:)

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

So - seeing as studying bores the cack out of me - here's what I've been doing today.....

The wheels are far from perfect, but they currently stand me at about £60 all in, including the purchase price and all materials for the refurb :slayer:

And here's the back end - it's definitely a work in progress, as I'm waiting for a few more flowers..... :)

I think I'll have to hit the books tomorrow though..... (n)

Re: Scudo 'it's not just a van' build diary

So, today I decided to hit the books for my forthcoming final exam.....

But then the postman came and I thought fcuk it, and put some more flowers on the van!
