Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

This is my old set up

Keeping the Hertz Es300 sub as that cost me a fairabit and its brilliant.
Get Front Hertz or JL front component speakers
As for the amp for the sub not too sure yet might stick with my orion one for now. just need some time to install this stuff.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Nice, I'm gonna invest in a good sub at some point in the future now that I have front speakers and an amp installed. Just need some money and the time to do it, it's always about time and money with everything lol.

I'll probably start a proper boot build when I do that though, got a wood workshop at my disposal til about may.

Oh by the way, does anyone know if it is possible to get a Punto-sized garage I can use when I need to get stuff done on the car, it's just so annoying with all the rain I can't do anything. And I can't use my garage as my stepdad has turned that into his bike workshop lol.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Had an interview with the Armed Forces Careers Office there, hoping to join the RAF in the summer. I think it's in the Oracle or something, whatever the shopping centre is called. It was a nightmare to get to, got lost twice lol, never using google maps again!

what you hoping to go in as?

im going into the RAF after Uni, as a WSOP Linguist ;)

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

I had real trouble deciding what I wanted to go in as, I knew I wanted to be Aircrew but I loved every job in that category lol. So in the end I took my Grandad's advice and aimed high. I applied for Pilot, ideally I'd like to be a helicopter pilot. Gonna be s**t scary if I go into theatre as that! Can't wait.

Only problem is I'm not fast with mental arithmetic, and I think this will be my downfall, so at the moment I'm just doing lots of it to try and get better.

So I figured if I failed my pilot application disastrously then I know I'm not cut out for it and I can re-apply as a Weapon Systems Officer/Operator, I'd love to be a Crewman.

Anyway, if you're still reading lol, I've got my presentation in April, in Brigton, at 0830, oh the RAF do like to be awkward lol, so I'll let you know how it goes. I actually have written a blog describing my progress through my application and (hopefully) training, here it is if you, or any one else for that matter, wants to read it.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Good luck with that.

I was going to sign up to be sponsored through University back in the early 90s - but the sight requirements to fly anything remotely interesting were a big issue for me - I am slightly short sighted, and in those days you couldn't get laser correction.

As I didn't fancy being stuck flying the Hercules (sitting duck in combat, IMHO), I decided not to do it.

Biggest mistake of my life.

Go for it, hope you get it, and if they knock you back for combat craft, don't walk away if the alternative is logistics craft - a pilot's licence is a meal ticket for life.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Thanks very much, I'll do my best.

Oh right, sorry to hear that. What are you doing now then?

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

I'm a retail area manager now.

Pays OK, but nowhere near as good as you can get as an airline pilot - which is what most RAF pilots 'retire' to once they've done their stint.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

One thing I really do not want to do is become an airline pilot.

Although I'm not going to make any plans now because I know things will change but I'd love to do something on the airshow side of life after my 'stint' and then go into maybe custom cars/motorsport team that sort of thing. Not really related to flying but looks interesting. Either that or a cushy management job that pays well :D

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

I was tinkering around under the bonnet the other day, general engine/fluid checks and just seeing what was what. I also tightened up my airbox as that was flapping about and as I finished I noticed the air intake tube was pointing in the most ridiculous place, right up close to the side wall of the engine just behind the headlight, getting very little air.

Now some people might disagree with me but after relocating it so that it faces the front of the car, I am getting a lot more air and I have to say I can feel the difference, it doesn't feel as sluggish, and can cope with hills slightly better. It might just be a 'all in your head' thing but I'm ok with it :)

Anyway the point is, does anybody know of any other little bits and pieces you can play around with to make things more efficient/run smoother etc? Obviously cleaning engine parts etc. but anything else?

i know its not really like proppa cheap .. but i got a new exhaust back box ...
and just straightened out the exhaust piping so that theres no curves and that seemed to be a real improvement .. the back box was 29.99 from ebay :L and cost £40 to fit it .. worth it though mate.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Ooh right, ok cheers, might give that a go :)

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Hi all, little issue with my front left door speaker, sounds exactly like a bad connection but I have checked all the connections and they are all sound (no pun intended lol). It plays intermitently when I go over bumpy roads or even turn left! Sometimes it works but sounds very quiet and muffled. For the time being, so I don't break it any further I have turned it off as it is quite annoying.

I have a Sony CDX-GT530UI head unit and a JBL GT5-A604E 4 Channel Amplifier powering 2x JBL GTO-0608C Component Speakers and 1x JBL GT5-10 Subwoofer.

Everything else works perfectly, just the front left door speaker.

I took the speaker itself out and tested it independently, works perfectly, magnet not broken, no damage to the cone etc. Just doesn't work in the car... wtf?

If anybody has any idea what the problem could be or could offer me a little help it would be much appreciated, I really want to get this problem sorted, preferably for free as I have to fork out to get two panels re-sprayed.

Thanks a lot guys

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Is anybody selling any Mk2b rear lights? Or know where I can find some?

Also, discovered I had a lot of rust while I was under the car today, can anybody explain what I need to do to treat this? What works well?

I wouldn't normally bother with this, it's just that I don't really want to sell the car, I would rather spend lots of time and money and make it like new :D

Checked ebay, nowt. Will ring local scrappy first thing monday morning.

I think I can manage that. With the welding though, I've never welded before. I have a TIG welder but... :S

Any tips for that? lol, sorry for all the questions, but wanna know what I'm doing before I go scorching the bottom of my car.

carefull weldin mate, use all goggles and gloves can blind you and burn you, clean the surface and earth to a clean bit of metal,we always remove the earth terminal of the car dunno why might interfear with the earth from tig maybe lol

Anyway clean it all of use sheet metal to cover weak spots, id pull up the carpet on inside as at work we did weldin on a punto and had to pull carpets out cos the heat sets fire on the inside so keep some water around just like little flames appear, prolby just bow them out but dont want carpet catchin innit

Weld tacks to hold in place then thin penetrating weld along edges, grind down the welding a bit when done with angel grinder and then underseal.

Re: My Punto Mk2 - will add to it in the future

Awesome, I think I can do that. Thanks very much mate.

Might be a couple of days but will post pics of the results.
