Punto (Mk2/2b) Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread).

Introduction

unfortunatly on fri 13th of all days i crashed my car :(
in the wet.
i wasnt speeding but the back end slid out as i was leavin a corner(bend in the road).
tryed controling it but it started snakin.managed to avoid all the oncoming traffick.but hit a parked car with the side of mine wich caterpulted me into the curb witch ripped the tire off the rim and that spun me into a 360 spin wich i managed to controle as the back end was lifting up i stopped it from roling onto the roof.im well gutted
i realy am devistated as id just got it to look how i wanted it.
but it could have been a lot worse. i could have hit the oncoming cars or roled it but i manged to avoid both with quick thinking.
i was unhurt. just realy shook up. (n)

tyres nearly new. 205 wide also

Just out of interest, name and shame the tyres you were using. At 205-width on something as light as a Punto, the potential for aquaplaning is high. When I switched from 155 Pirelli P3000s to 185 Yokohama A539s, dry grip was fantastic, but wet grip was just awful. It was a case of grip...grip...let go completely! And I struggled to catch it when this happened. I then switched to Yokohama s.Drive tyres, and they are great in the dry, and really progressive and predictable in the wet. I've not had a single slide-induced scary moment with them on the corners.

Yeah i know that now lol.grip was bril in dry weather.but like you say grip is very minor limited in wet. I wont be going so wide on my new punto. Was also a paxn gettin wheels on that wide.had to use 2cm spacers and open arches. Money i spent on getting the wheels and getting them on the car i could have got a decent set of new alloys!

£350 quid? Thats cheap, what was wrong with it?

Also I have really wide tyres now and in the wet my back end is always trying to slide out on round-a-bouts etc. not nice losing it though! I did twice in the ice, luckily 1st one a curb stopped me (damaging my alloy though) and 2nd wasn't as bad just slid sideways :p (10 MPH aswell!)

Bargain! Done a compression test? Make sure engine is perfectly sound! Don't wanna put all these things on the car for it to emerge a few months later! Happened to me, turns out the cylinder head was slightly cracked, as I drove it it got worse. Would have noticed before hand if I had tested it

Not done no tests but bin driving it since november without any probs.plus wer i got mot done was a m8s garage.gave it a once over and said its in realy good nick for age

Looks all good then, MOT wouldn't check engine though, and your mates garage might not have. I just think them sorta deals are too good to be true! Good luck with it though! Couldn't have asked for better if everything's good!

Just to say, took me 6 months to notice anything wrong on my car!

yeah i know anything could go wrong.
guy i got it off was a member on here, probly still is but cant remember his name lol. but he seemed a decent guy. he wanted a quick sell as he wanted a deposit for a mk2b. he did have it on here for £450 for 2months but no interest  so he dropped it to £350. its as though the car was ment for me haha

Going back to the original crash. Back in the mists of time when I was younger and considerably dafter, I overtook a pick up truck on a country lane - no great drama and quite safe, except the next corner I came to (a left hander unfortunately) I lost the back end (it was a Sierra) and went through a convenient gap in the hedge in to a field. Very luckily I didn't hit anything hard (it was 5am) and I was able to get back on the road.
The only damage was to the tyres and rims on the offside.
I had never had a crash before. I had taken an advance drivers course voluntarily when I was only 21, so I was quite shocked as to what had gone wrong.
When the tyre man came out to fit me up with 2 new wheels and tyres, he found a big nail through the back drivers side tyre. He had found the problem. I had had a puncture just before the bend, but the tyre hadn't deflated completely, but the first bend I came to, I had no grip from the back end at all.
Maybe the op had a puncture he wasn't aware of?
O'h yes, and the pick up truck I had passed - National Tyres !
