Punto (Mk2/2b) Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread).

Introduction

unfortunatly on fri 13th of all days i crashed my car :(
in the wet.
i wasnt speeding but the back end slid out as i was leavin a corner(bend in the road).
tryed controling it but it started snakin.managed to avoid all the oncoming traffick.but hit a parked car with the side of mine wich caterpulted me into the curb witch ripped the tire off the rim and that spun me into a 360 spin wich i managed to controle as the back end was lifting up i stopped it from roling onto the roof.im well gutted
i realy am devistated as id just got it to look how i wanted it.
but it could have been a lot worse. i could have hit the oncoming cars or roled it but i manged to avoid both with quick thinking.
i was unhurt. just realy shook up. (n)

Nope, airbag won't work. Otherwise its a straight swap

thanks for reply. thats grate news. il be covering the dash in a cloth material so airbag wont even show up as it will be coverd by the cloth.

but why wouldnt the airbag work? id have all wires etc? just curious

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

The dash without the airbag is solid across where it should be. So I'd imagine you'd have to saw off the section so the airbag can come through.

the old car has the airbag and the section for it to release. it says airbag on that dash. i ment if i put that whole dash in my 3door could i then use that airbag?

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

If you wired it all up right I suppose it would easily be possible to wire the airbag in then, yeah! Might be a bit tricky though

il give it a go. as long as all wires fit and the full dash will fit. i wont have a problem with the airbag light displaying would i if it was fitted ok? i mean the ecu would pick it up ok?

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

But putting a fabric over the dash will mean that even if you get it to function properly, it won't actually do you any good in an accident, as the fabric will stop the airbag from deploying properly.

You'd have to wire up the airbag ecu, with whatever sensors it needs. It's probable that the wiring is in the loom, it's cheaper to make all the looms the same and have some spare wires than it is to make individual looms for different variants, but I reckon sorting the airbag would be more hassle than it's worth!

Won't be saying that if it saves a passengers life in the future!

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

Ain't gonna be saving anyones life if it's covered up in fabric!

i see your point but i was going to cover the airbag panel seperate. But if its to much hassle to wire it up then i wont bother. Its not like il be loosing out on an airbag as i dont have one in it now

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

The airbag cover panel is specially designed to split in a particular way. I would suggest that any covering other than the manufacturers design is likely to impair the operation. The panels are usually weakened in a star pattern so that they split from the centre allowing the airbag out. If you cover this in fabric then it can't split properly.

If you're going to wire the airbag I'd suggest, for safety, that you leave that bit uncovered, as if it can't split properly it's likely to propel a large chunk of dash out into the passenger compartment in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury rather than reducing it!

Don't want to be a spoilsport, or naysayer, just pretty certain that it's not worth the effort of wiring it all up if it's not gonna work!

yeah i understand totaly mate. dont think il bother wiring it up then as i did open another thread askin bout this and replys seem to be it will basicly be a pain in the arse to fit lol. so probly just not bother wiring it up and just cover it up so it looks like it was never there. but can i take out actual airbag so i can use the front panel fascia so theres no big hole in the dash?

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

sneeky peek of the dash in the car. desided to spray instead of fabric as it would have been a payn to get the fabric right without creases and folds and cuts etc.

so anyways heres 1 pic. glove box not on yet but thats black with blue handle. did have it all on in the car and it looks brill but iv come accross some electrical problems so had to strip the dash again. finishing it off tomorrow........

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

well nipped out to halfords today and spent £8 on a box of 100 mixed mini fuses. replaced every mini fuse in the ecu box and then rememberd the fuse box under the bonnet. replaced all mini ones in there to ( but to be fair none of them looked damaged) then looked at the big ones under the bonnet and what do you know one has shortend. so went to a motor factors near mine and payed £5.98 for 2 big fuses. and problem solved. so now car is all put together. heres pics........

now i lknow its not best job in the world and i did a few scratches putting it all ack in. but when i can be botherd i will be touching it up (y)

Re: Out with the old, in with the new (my punto mk2a progress thread)

Interiors looking really nice :) can't wait to actually see it :D

I've heard taking the dash out is a real biatch to put back in.. how long it take you ?

4 hours to take it out with a few breaks in-between. rest of night to spray it and let set. to put back in about 2hours ish. and that was with a break and some annoying 5 year old kids asking me what's wrong with my car every 10mins lol
