Punto (Mk2/2b) My black MK2 :)

Introduction

Thaught id finally get my car in this section :)

mods done so far:

  • Tinted lights
  • New door cards/centre console/handbrake surround (from HGT)
  • Removed rub strips
  • Blue dash lights
  • Rear speakers fitted
  • Seat covers (purely to hide cigarette burns from the people who had it before me)
  • Pillars sprayed black (just to freshen up)

In progress:

  • Spraying some interior parts (cd facia, outer rings on air vents, centre console and handbrake surround and possibly speaker grills)

The blue trim shown on those pictures is temporary, this was a practice on some spare parts.... i managed to get a good finish and it is a nice colour, just not for my car!

i will keep looking in scrap yards for a steering wheel because i want a HGT front ashtray aswel because i broke mine :(

and i dont know what to do with that fusebox cover (to the right of the steering wheel) because its a really arkward shape, the part shown is alright but just off camera there it a part that would never look right so i was thinking about spraying the bottom up to and including those slots in it and follow the pattern down so im also missing the hard part... either that or do it all and accept the fact its not a great finish.....

Damn, looking quite good. Got a load of questions mate. I've wanted to spray mine for ages, so started to sand the dash down with normal sandpaper to force myself to do it, I'll move on to wet and dry soon... Just trying to work out wether I want it totally smooth or just a slight texture, so sorta half sand it. Theres no way I'm taking the dash out so i'll be masking up every part of the inside of the car lol.

What paint did you use?
Did you use laquer?
Did you sand it down at all? Or just spray straight on?
Primer?

Cheers mate!

i sanded it down with rough sandpaper, went over it with 400 grit, then 800

gave it 2 coats of primer, sanded that with 800 then 1200

then used matt black spray paint which i got from my local motor factors

i was going to laquer it but decided not to because i was talking with my mate whilst i was spraying it and he said you can do but it will make it shiny, i then thaught about laquering the top part so it matched but then thaught of the impracticality when the sun shines on it!

but thinking about it now, the centre console is laquered and that doesnt look shiny.. but the black but by the handbrake is laquered (straight onto the plastic) and that is... so i think it depends what is being laquered

If your leaving everything in the car, to make it easier to get at the hard places, take out the simple things like the glove box, fusebox cover and i would also remove the clocks, cd player surround and centre console but that is just something i would do to make it easier for myself :)

Hope this has helped
Mike

Thanks for the reply mate.

Yeah I'll be taking most things out :)

In your pics it looks like the texture is still there? Looks as if you hadn't sanded it. Did you 'half' sand it, or sand it down to total smoothness?

Matt black looks good mate, think I'll do the same. I was planning on using laquer too, but not sure if I want the shineyness.

yeh there is still texture, i didnt want it smooth and then have the top bit textured (would probably look ok thinking about it now but its just personal preferance and what you think at the time!)

I basically gave it a quick rub down to help the primer stick, about the laquer, im not sure if it would make it shiny, try spraying a spare part or a part your not bothered about (with the same texture) and see how it turns out

also heres a tip- if your spraying in cold weather, warm the spray can up 1st, i used a hairdryer, then shook the can, then hairdryer again, only for a few mins... its also good to warm the surface up slightly (just so its not really cold, doesnt have to be that warm) and if you can, apply a gentle warmth for a minute or so after each coat, i found this help prevent runs

thanks for the advice mate. I have a second glove box I can try stuff out on :)

cheers

I got the steering wheel from ebay, the seller put as the title "Fiat Punto airbag+steering wheel"

go a search for "punto sporting steering wheel" would not have brought it up

i was trying to see how much the standard ones were going for and came across that, £50 posted!

theres one without the airbag for £27 posted but then you have the trouble of getting the airbag!!

The rear lights i baught from someone on here, but now i would do it myself (if sprayed my centre console/dash/friends mums wing mirror all with reasonably good finishes so i would definatly do it myself now!)

I agree, a few minor carefully picked changes can make a car look better than one big change :)

I however, just get an idea and go along with it... luckily for me its worked out pretty well :)

Im sorry i didnt spray the top part of the dash though :(
