126 Eklipze3k's Latest Toy

Introduction

Bought myself a new toy over the weekend. My phone doesn't really do it justice so will get some better pictures soon.

It's a 1983 FIAT 126 652cc Aircooled, with just shy of 31k on the clock. Not a patch of rust to be seen anywhere and the engine is beautiful. Only things needing looked at are the brakes and the choke, but she starts drives and stops which are the 3 most important things in my book (y)

It's provisionally named SR-71 for now. Drove it back from Strichen yesterday (about 1.5hrs) and couldn't stop smiling the full way, was getting looks from everyone!

Don't got no tunnels 'round these parts :p

First admission I'll make is that I sheared one of the bolts when removing the old zorst so the new one is blowing a little. Got a spare bolt lying around so will try drilling the old one out and replacing it, otherwise it'll be new manifold time.

Edit: Just FYI, didn't do this at the time 'cos my drill's battery was dead and I wanted to at least get it test fitted. As it happened it did require me to do some fettling of the rear apron so just as well I didn't sit twiddling my thumbs :)

I just couldn't help it and had to register when I saw this thread. The car, that has been everywhere since I was born. Even first ride from the hospital, then had one in the garage (non-runner) through all my childhood - was great to pretend to drive in it and play around. Of course I learnt to drive in one as well. If you haven't guessed I'm from Poland, home of this little nipper :)

First of all, I was really amazed few years ago when I saw 126 right hand drive. I even took a photo hehe. Anyway, I like the one you have, It looks really really good, I've never seen interior like this. Is it stock? Apart from that, dont you think that chrome bumpers would look much better? Stuff like this is still just about cheap as chips in PL. It won't be long until it all goes up, coz sadly they don't last for long. Even though Poland is still full of them, they're slowly vanishing. I can only mention that my old man has quite a big van and (like most of men who were driving through the 80's and 90's) quite a huge knowledge about these fiats. Let me know if there's anything. U know when I read that you paid £20 for brakes hehe my god, you could probably pick up a completely drivable one for about £50 :p The problem is that you people like to complicate your lives by putting steering wheel on the wrong side of the car LOL Guess that makes it all quite special and unique with cars over here.
Anyway, hope I'm any help to you and good luck, keep it up!

New manifolds, bolts and gaskets ordered this morning. Gotta fabricate some kind of mounting plate to hold the exhaust to the engine as it hangs slightly lower than the original (guess the 126p is slightly different ) and then he'll be all ready for St Andrews at the end of the month!
Hoping I have enough time to route the new accelerator and choke cables before then but I'm not looking forward to that :(

:cry::cry::cry:

Got new manifolds, bolts and gaskets and set to work this morning but oh no, it's 25 years old and Italian so of course it wouldn't be as simple as replacing parts!

First off, here's the old ones. The left one is the one from the back of the engine and was still usable, the right as you can see is goosed.

However, here is where the real fun starts! The bolt on the right is what was holding the goosed manifold to the head and is clearly massive!!1!

I can only assume that at some point someone threaded the head and had to get it re-tapped. So now I have to enlarge the holes in the brand new manifold to accomodate for this

On the plus side, everything fits perfectly to the exhaust, just got to attach it to the car now

Seen the car before but cant remember where. Like it :)
But remember looking at it and thinking mmm bike engined would be nice!

Got the manifold drilled out on Monday and fabricated a mount as the exhaust didn't meet the existing one quite well as I'd have expected. Now that it's not blowing it's even louder than it was before!

Also just finished fitting a cigar lighter so that I can use my sat-nav and not get lost on the way to Stanford Hall - oh yes :D
