John Dragon Man's Peugeot 306 Estate 1.9 Turbo Diesel

Introduction

Greetings Everyone!

So i present to you, A car that cost me a grand total of £50!

A Green Peugeot 306 estate with the 1.9 XUD (1905cc) turbo diesel engine.

i bought this car almost 2 weeks ago. it was from one of my brothers work colleagues. it had been in there family for 16 years. the car has never been serviced in this time. just the oil topped up when it needed it and parts replacing for the MOT. its just had a whole complete exhaust fitted to it!.

as you can imagine it was well ready for a good service. first thing was an oil change while i waited for a replacement cam belt kit with water pump as that cam belt was ohh scary! (i'll get a picture of it is that bad)

surprisingly the engine has little blow by which i did expect especially with 150k miles on it. the thing does not even smoke on startup or under load!

the oil was.. not as bad as i expected. it was pretty bad though.
i got a garage to do the cam belt as it was such a pain to get accesses to. for £170 i did not mind that much.

when i got it, it had some really bad electrical faults. the 2 front windows do not work, the radio, clock, central locking, intermittent wiper, rear wiper, multiple speakers, interior light, and loads of other things did not work.
its got a clicky CV joint when turned full lock on the passenger side, the sunroof leaks like crazy, it is also very slow to move and very temperamental.
the only rust it seems to have is around the sun roof. i will have to look into ways of fixing this. one of the methods i though of was to chip out the crusty rust, use some rust converter, paint it using whatever then to fill the holes use expanding foam, cut off level then hollowed down to give me a structure to apply filler to then skim and sand it smooth. the foam is pretty water resistant so should prevent any more rust on the inside. its a bodge as the best way of fixing it is to cut out the bad and weld in new but the car cost me £50 and i think this would work just as well.

well most of the electrical faults have been fixed now. the central locking now works from the remote, the interior light works, the radio and clock are also working now.

i have also been looking into upgrading the headlights to the later clear lens type. the ones it has are pretty weak in terms of light output.

... and i could not help myself could i.

clear lenses mean i can install projector lenses into the original reflectors if i open the headlight up.

my plan is to not use HID or LEDs but keep with the halogens. these projector lenses are bi-xenon meaning they can do dipped beam and high beam. this means that if i install them to the dipped beam reflector i will have effectively 2x high beams per headlight!

i have a YouTube playlist up of the car so i can keep adding videos to it. as i make them, >>see it here<<:

stay tuned!
Looks like fun.

The fuel filter housing can leak air, known weak spot on the XUD9, replacement is available from PSA.

Give the back axle a good going over, though at 150K miles, the bushings should be ok.

If the front end feels like it's not really attached to the rest of the car, wishbones need doing.

All the XUD9s in my family have gone well over 300,000 km, rear axle is the weak point.

Oooh, still got these alloys sitting in the shed with low mileage tyres on if you're looking for a cheap set - 15", had them on the 206 but don't have a car to put them on any more.

M reg cars were normally late 94- early 95 mate so could be either but as this model is a face lift 306 its a 98 onwards

Right ok, i just skimmed one of johns vids and its not got that plate on, didnt see the whole thing but its got a r-reg plate in the vids so Aj80 is bang on, r-reg is 1998-1999, i had a r-reg mk1 punto once so i remember that reg year. So perhaps I was really wrong and people who don't give a single **** about cars do fit private plates, who knew?!?

I still can't see someone who never services a car doing stuff like change plates and fit facelift parts but i bow to your superior frenchie knowledge lol.

whats different between the facelift and older ones bar headlights?
On face lifts normally different interiors and front ends and sometimes rear lights are different mate that's normally it dash are the sane and clocks probably some extra features that early models never came with or were never thought if adding when first made

ive not been getting any email updates on this thread or i would have replied sooner!

yes the car is an R reg 1997 (as most of the plastics in the car have 1997 on the date wheel stamp thing)
the guy did have a silvery blue audi TT that was his wifes car.

i had a little bit of a look under the back today and around the jacking points. the rear panel has started to rust.. the galv has started to peel away. so i can nip that in the bud quick. the front jacking point mounts are a little more corroded but still only surface rust. again i can wire brush that and paint over it.

the two front foot wells have moss growing in them.. yes moss. where the sunroof leaked for so long.
i have lifted the carpets up so it can get some air under them and maybe dry them out a little.

after the cam belt change the engine feels better. the belt must have been stretched with age. one of the chaps at the garage i took it to said
"you are very very very lucky. i have never seen a cam belt in such a bad condition that has not snapped yet"

so that kinda made me feel glad it was changed!

the new oil is doing good. the dip stick has a lot less varnish on it than it did before. those detergents must be doing well. ill give it another oil change soon but before i will run some engine flush through it.

rear high brake light has been fixed, as has the slow sunroof.

working on the headlights now so should get them done tonight.
the face lift headlights are just clear lenses.. no beam pattern correction on the lenses like the older ones.

i have not got a camera phone at the moment or i would have loads of pictures by now.

Tbh mate always liked the 306 they ain't a bad car considered a few times in the past buying one and hope you ave a good time with it in the time of ownership is it the TDI or hdi engine you got in it

306's have a nasty habit of snapping wires in places where they move like on doors or boot hatches/tailgates.

this causes electronic door locks, windows, mirrors, speakers, lights, wiper, and well anything else electronic in a door or hatch to not work.

needless to say, the rear boot hatch and passenger side door electronics have been fixed

meaning that everything now works on the boot hatch and passenger door. i have 4 working speakers and a working rear wiper wooo! well the electric window does not yet but that is because the wiring on the drivers door has not been fixed... i hope... ive been told that the drivers door switch is kinda the "master switch" that the passenger door switch has to send a signal all the way to it to make the passenger window go down. interesting way of doing it...

ill have a look at the wiring on the drivers door tomorrow.

i have never needed a camera phone more than what i do now :(
