106 GTi Project (Track).

Introduction

Hi guys,

So as some of you may of seen i had an S reg gti in black. Unfortunately this was involved in a bump that i felt was not fixable. Progess Blog

So today i got a big update and a step forward. I drove from Preston, Lancs to Kelso, Scotland to pick up a Silver Gti Rolling Shell. It needs my Engine, Gearbox, Front Brakes, Interior and maybe a few other bits n bobs.

We went in 'The Venga Bus'. A TD5 Defender with Disco Transfer and Few other select mods, absolute monster, and it flys Barely noticed the trailer behind.

So once we arrived i straped up the car and of we went through the scottish country side. Absolutely stunning.

After a few stops along the way......

and 350 miles give or take i ended up home. Gave her a good wash down before it went completely dark....

Tried to get most of the algae, dirt, tree crap and bird crap of the car, going to give it a better wash in the week and also going to remove lots of the panels etc to give it a good going over.

Plans are:

Clean the whole thing, even underneath
Drop in engine from the Black GTi
Put Half Leathers in until i can find suitable buckets and cage etc.
And pretty much go from there. Got lots planned but things will change as a go along. The biggest hurdle is the engine transfer

Hoping to use it on the track so a track slag is the way im going atm!

anyways more to come soon. :D
Re: 106 GTi Project (Track)

So today i took sometime of work and got to work on the car.

Started of just after 9, after taking the trailer back to hire company.

Started by taking the front end apart, well this confused me, i mean realy confused me. I couldnt figure out how the f*** the bumper came of, finally found it unfortunately. This then following by taking of the wings and side skirts and then the bonnet. Got a bit lost for some of the bolts on the wing but didnt do to bad.

I then proceeded to give it a degrease and rinse of. Needs another going over but a big improvement to how it was before.

I then started on the rust, give it a bit of kurust followed by a lick off hamerite primer anti rust. (not painted in the pic).

I also stripped the inside and give it a good clean, only the dashboard it left on. Dont know what to do inside yet? any ideas?

I then put her to bed.... night night

Re: 106 GTi Project (Track)

Re: 106 GTi Project (Track)

Slow with the updates as ive been busy but....

Ive cleaned up the engine bay and derusted and sprayed what i need to for now. May do a bit more before i put the engine in. Needs more of a degrease than anything.

Ive stripped down the front end of the blackun. Took off the Rad, Air Filter, Manifold Cover and a few other bits. Still got a bit to go.

was out there working along with the bro on his mini.... (derusting lol)

Couple side by sides......

Re: 106 GTi Project (Track)

After work i got down to doing some more work.

Started of by having a battle with the exhaust, damn thing. Nearly rounded the bolts!
Used a bit of sprayed (similar to WD40, but better) and the bolts to the manifold came of in no time! So thats all the exhaust of bar the manifold.

I then set to removing the Battery tray, the clutch cable which confused me for about 15 minutes until i finally got it off lol.

I then set to removing the ECU and ECU tray. Also got the throttle cable of and a few other cables.

Does anyone know how to get the bottom Manifold Bracket Bolt of? cant seem to get the bugger of, can only get to one side of the spring bolt?!?! im going mad trying to get it off

not long until i need to hire the engine crane, hopefully in the next few days :D

Re: 106 GTi Project (Track)

It seemed it at first, but tbh im very surprised how easy it has been so far, and hopefully will be as i get on.

Just been onto spoox motorsport, excellent service, darren was very helpful and also very good at convincing me to hand over my card details. So watch this space for parts on thurs/fri :D

Re: 106 GTi Project (Track)

Not got anything on it

finally got the crane yesterday and some time to give it a go. Engine nearly out, cant seem to disconnect the gear linkages? doing my head in. Hopefully out and in this week and mostly connected up. Think the fluids (brakes, steering etc) are going to be the main and onyl issues (hopefully).

Re: 106 GTi Project (Track) - ENGINE OUT!

Well went of to the hire shop and asked for a crane, fella said to me ‘ what car you putting it in lad?’ i said, that mercedes outside…….. his face was a picture followed by ‘are you serious?’, yup i was. Just throw it in lol.

Got it home and got to work disconnecting the last things on the engine. Few issues where i forgot certain things like gear linkages etc but all sorted now.

Ooooo its finally out….

And matching it up to see what it looks like.

Needs a good clean now and all the new engine mounts and manifold :D

More to come!
