My FIRST Car

Introduction

Having recently passed my driving test, thought I'd get some pictures up of my first car:D

It is a Renault Laguna 1.8 8v RT sport and I love it:D :

What a strange choice for a first car, what made you get that? How much to insure?

You cant park it very well, across loads of spaces in one photo, in a field the next.....

It's insurance group 7, and I'm running it from my mums policy, so around £900ish in total.

Basically, no-one I know of has one of these. Most of my mates drive 1.0 **** corsa's and fiestas etc. That alone is a good enough reason to buy it.

I refuse to pay ridiculous amounts of insurance for a small tin on wheels that doesnt have anything in the way of decent brakes, saftey features or power to get yourself out of dangerous situations quickly. So I figured I may as well pay a bit more for a decent car.

I was never one to be owning a 1.1 etc as my first car. I was originally after a 1.6 ford focus but didnt have the funds.

Love my laguna though:D

Wonder why :chin:

Only messin mate if you're happy with it then good, that's what counts (y)

Its a really nice car:cool: I drove my mums punto after a week of driving my laguna and it was like walking through a slum and being shot at.

Can't beleive how poor quality the Mk1 punto is in comparison:bang: Still looks the dogs danglies though(y)

Nice first car have you been thinking if your next one is going to be a fiat:D

Power to get yourself out of situations?? I don't mean to sound negative here but that lag in 1.8 8v guise is underpowered to say the least! I drove one for a few months after I passed my test till I got the Punto :p It wasn't that much quicker than the Punto, and always felt like there could be more, from what is essentially a rep car, and we all know how reps drive :D. Had more torque to play with though which made it nicer to drive than the 1.2 Punto round town. Great brakes compared to the Punto or the Sei, as you would expect from a car like that.

I still think the mk1 Lags look fresh even though they've been around over a decade. Still love the looks, especially when their finished nicely, take a look at the BTCC version :yum:

The ride in the Lag was absolutely brilliant (if you like comfort) in comparison to the Fiats though, although you would expect that with those lovely soft seats and the suspension. Just don't try and chuck it around or it will bite you in the ass :D I was actually looking into buying one to play with as I like them that much, in 1.6 16v guise or 2.0 8v, but doubt it'll happen :(

On the whole, great car (y) I still miss the radio cover :(

The car essentially is underpowered, but it'll sit at whatever speed you put it at and stay there and be fine with it. None of this gearchange at 4k revs **** to get moving either.

Its fast enough for someone who's just passed their test anyways;)

The 1.6 16v is like 110bhp, whereas my 1.8 8v is only 95bhp.

Originally I was after the 1.8 16v but thats almost double the insurance group. and with 120bhp to throw around, I'd most likely die!:D

Yeah it's brilliant on the motorway, as opposed to having to forward plan for hills with the Punto :D Ride is ten times better for that too, it felt very stable, unlike the Punto that got blown around! Someones nicked your splitter! There's a guy on here called Cinquepunto, and I say it was him!:p

A few years ago everyone wanted a laguna splitter - could be made to fit any thing! I had one on my MK2 Astra SRI

They were soo easy to rip off the laguna, not one lag left in town with theirs still on ;) every chav had one LOL

Yes, we can see. So you use fraud instead :shakehead

Why do you think most young drivers drive 'small tins on wheels'? Maybe A: their parents try to make them take on their own responsibilities in life and/ or B: they don't have parents who will take out insurance fraudulently. One of the things about becoming an adult is standing on your own two feet and proving your merit. Can't see any signs of this here...

for a small tin on wheels that doesnt have anything in the way of decent brakes, saftey features or power to get yourself out of dangerous situations quickly.

If it passes the MOT and complies with the UK Construction and Use Act then the brakes are 'decent'.

Safety features? The biggest safety feature in ANY car is the driver. All the safety features in the world are of little use unless the person behind the wheel puts in 99% of the effort to be safe...

And the same power that will 'get yourself out of dangerous situations quickly' is the same power that will get you INTO dangerous situations quickly. It's a complete myth that less power is dangerous and don't forget that higher powered cars are more expensive to insure for good reason

I was never one to be owning a 1.1 etc as my first car. I was originally after a 1.6 ford focus but didnt have the funds.

Hmmm, is this a size issue? You know, the bigger the car the smaller the... :p

Don't knock the tiddlers! I had the same mindset when I first started driving and refused to drive a small girly hatchback. Mind you, when I got my first car the small hatchbacks were expensive compared with a mid sized 'reps special' saloon car. So I drove around in a very under powered mk1 Vauxhall Cavalier with all of 1.3 litres. I then progressed up to a 1.6 Maestro, then reached the pinnacle of a 2.0 litre Cortina Ghia. Thought I'd never be seen dead in a small hatchback, but after needing poverty transport I ended up with my first Uno purely for practical reasons. I thought I'd hate it, but nine years later I still drive a little 1.0 litre Uno (not the same one I hasten to add). And do you know what? It's much more fun to drive than all the bigger engined cars I've had ;)

you do know that if you mum insures it as a main driver when its really your car and you drive it most is fraud, and the insurance is void?

:yeahthat:

No wonder you blank out your number plate when posting pics of your car

Too many young drivers drive bigger/ more powerful cars using this named driver 'deception'. If you have an accident and your insurance company finds out you could be facing serious charges of driving without valid insurance and might also end up facing an enormous claim PERSONALLY. Don't think it never happens because it does.

As has been said before, if you can't afford to insure a car off your own back and on your own merit then you shouldn't be driving it.

I don't know much about Lagunas, but how come it's your first car and you're on a forum for Fiats? Everyone is welcome here of course, but most have or have had a Fiat!

Good luck with the car, but please, don't be yet another young driver in a bigger car on their parent's insurance who has an accident and bumps up the premiums for everyone else :(

ok how is it actually possible to get caught being the man driver? if you crash you just say i borrowed the car at the time, theres no way an insurance company could find out unless you crash 4 times or somthing and you're driving all the time even then the evidence is only circumstantial, they would have to hire a private detective for a week to get proper proof.

Young driver crashes car.

Police get called.

Young driver in shock and nervous.

Police Officer: " Is this your car?"

Young Driver: "Yes."

Police Officer checks the details of the car on the national computer. This shows who the car is registered to. It also names who insured the car, which insurance company it is with, whether it is taxed and MOT'd etc.

Police Officer: "Do you have insurance?"

Young Driver: "Yes. I'm on my mum's policy."

Police Officer: "So it's your car but you are driving on your mum's policy?"

Young Driver: "Erm... erm... yeah but, no but..."

One slip of the tongue and that's it, you get caught out. The Police are canny to young drivers in bigger/ more powerful cars. They know that most young drivers can't afford to drive them so their suspicions are raised. Does mum's car really have neons in the footwell and red seat belt pads? A sub in the boot and a 300w amp under the passenger seat? Chrome gear lever surround, painted interior plastics, Lockwood white dial kit?

Don't forget that witnesses such as neighbours may also be asked questions, CCT cameras are everywhere, number plate recognition is becoming common place to match up your every move that you might be questioned about. How come mummy's car is always parked at son's workplace/ university when mummy stays at home? Ever had an accident and been asked questioned when you're still in shock? It's not easy to try and remember alibis in that kind of situation.

All it takes one accident and one attentive Police Officer. After you've been prosecuted for driving without insurance (and mummy gets done for fraud) just try getting insurance after that. No insurance company will touch you...
