it's running sluggish and not accelerating very quickly. Someone suggested removing air flow/mass sensor to see if it helped, this worked. Is it safe to assume this is the problem and can we just change it or do we need a diagnostic check before or after to set it?
There are no warning lights on dash before or after disconecting sensor.

You need the air flow sensor for the ECU to work correctly as it sends information back to it. Get it on a diagnostics at Fiat, it will cost about £40 but at least you will find out the problem. Then of course when its at least running correctly come and see me and I will remap it for you and give you 150+bhp:D

Ask around for diagnostic quotes then when you get one ask them if they'll refund all or part of it if you get the fault fixed at that garage.

Lol Nige, keep plugging.;)

Diagnostic check showed following errors;- coherence between phase signal & revs,EGR, Air flow meter and Air temp sensor. I've had new air mass meter and reset eng control unit. all fixed !
Mechanic said timing belt needs replacing, cars 5yrs old and 17,000 miles any suggestions?

sue

Fiat recommend 72 month/72k miles for timing belt change. This may be OK if driven by a nun who never takes it above 3k rpm ;)

Most people recommend about 50k for a timing belt change. Although you have low miles, with the age of the car I would look to change the belt sooner rather than later, especially if you intend to use the engine aggresively.

Hi Sue
Having similar problems with a 2.4 jtd.
Disconnected the mass air flow indicator and as if by magic it runs great. ( sorry nige looks like i won't be needing that re-map ?)
I now need to have it replaced. Can you remember how much your part cost and are they common accross the range.

The part number I beleive for the MArea is 46533308 whcih will be about £160. Its a different part to the Alfa one, but is the same as the 1.9JTD Multipla?

As for the remap - you stick with your 136bhp and leave the power to the real men lol. Actually, get yourself a BMC air filter though, I fitted one to mine and its made even more power available, but especially low down.
