My gf has just been rear ended, no jokes now please, and her marea now looks a bit of a mess when looking at the back.

bumber all smashed up boot lid and boot floor all pushed in about 10-12 inches and at least one of the rear lights all smashed up.

its a 98 r reg marea 2.0 20v elx and has done about 90000 miles.

are they going to repair or write it off???

If the boot floor has been pushed in 12 inches I would expect the chassis to be damaged in some way. If it you can get a replacement for a reasonable price, that's the route I'd take.

thanks for the suggestions :)

I have only seen the car in the dark so will take some pics tomorrow and post them up.

the car has not really got any history and we have only had it 18 months so if i was to get a new one we wouldn't be in much of a different position.

you say write it off,do we have a say in that? I had, maybe wrongly, assumed that the insurance company would assess it and make a decision over if to write it off or repair the damage?

from my rough assesment in the dark, and my limited experiance of body work (work experiance in a ford body when shop i was 16),I just couldn't see how it would be viable to repair it for its value.

also wondering, if its written off, can I buy it back off them cheap and use it for spare parts for another one(it has a 20v 2.0 engine which must have some value)?

thanks again for the input :slayer:

No you dont have a say if the car is a write off or not - they asses if its economical to repair. The only way you can contest it is if you get someone else to value the repair and its within what price they will repair and not write off.

Yes you can buy it back :)

when people are putting forward prices of £300 for another one and even if on a bad day you are paying £700-£800, Personally I just can't see how they could repair it for that money.

have enjoyed driving it, but it may be a blessing in surprise as although she loved the power of the 2.0 20v the fuel consumption was a bit much.

you seem to get a good level of comfort as standard so would be up for another marea, but what are the diesel options like, I here the jtds are good but are we going to see a similar power as the 20v and what is fuel consumption like.

i think the jtds were a bit later than the current 98 20 v we have, what sort of price should i be paying for a decent one?

cheers

Looking at your pics, it requires new boot, slam panel, bumper and has dented a wing at least. Have you check the boot floor.?
Basically done through insurance, it will be written off. Most but not all insurance companies will allow you to buy it back.
You could repair it using secondhand panels, but some welding and body repair will need to be done.
Wonder why so many Mareas are getting damaged lately??

Andy.

oswestry is my home town although I haven't lived there for 10 years now.

from what i can tell the back of the car has been pushed in below the boot so i am assuming the boot floor has also been effected. can't actually get the boot open at the moment so can't say for sure.

was insured with a value of 1k but if they write it off what are we actually going to see? the value they put on it and if so where do they go for their valuation, look at ebay and you can get one for £300, look at autotrader and it could be £800 +

I am sure it is fixable, but at what cost, as i said before in some ways it might be a chance to get something more economical!

will get the seats down and have a look, although I suspect that my gf has aload of crap in there which may make the job a little harder
