okay, jimb0 is insisting his 20v (147 model) will top out 3rd gear at 115mph, now my 20v (147 model) tops out at 90mph in 3rd gear, this is on the limiter.

so, what are you guys achiving? want to know whats going on with this, as i feel mines slower than others and jimb0 is worried his speedo is out lol

Cheers,

What a weird thread - you are on the verge of being banned from driving, yet protest every time because either you never 'spotted' the camera, or you felt they were placed unfairly [or maybe the tyres were crap :chin:] - yet you want to know the max speed of your car in 3rd gear?

I have both a Bravo HGT 147bhp and a Fiat Coupe 20v 147bhp the coupe is running 215/45/17 tyres, the Bravo 205/50/15 tyres

The gear speed times for both cars are as follows.

1st gear: 38mph
2nd gear: 60mph
3rd gear: 90 mph

The rev limiter is at 7000 RPM

There is no way a 20v 147bhp could ever hit 115mph as this is what the coupe 20v turbo does in 3rd and they have much longer gear ratio's.

therefore
1: He means 4th gear although I think it would maybe pull 120 in 4th.
2: His speedo is a long long long long way out.
3: his car runs a different gearbox or ratio's.
4: His car runs to a higher rpm.

There is little point taking it to 7k as the 5cylinder is as quick in 4th and on torque. Speeds in gear are no indication of overall speed. Gears are selected by manufacturers to make the best utility of an engines torque and bhp.

When I have wrung the 1.8 out it does not go much faster in 5th than when it tops out in 4th. It is redlined at 6500 and at 21 mph/1000 rpm is bit overdriven, about 12 % which is reasonable. (claimed top = 120 and calculated at max rpm = 137)I have seen an indicated 120, prolly 117 true based on GPS checks at 70 MPH where the speedo was quite accurate . The book claims 102 in 4th but it will do better than that and I did a sum after checking MPH/1000 rpm in 4th today that puts it on the limiter at 108 MPH. 78 MPH in 3rd is claimed and there I would expect it to bounce off the limiter at that speed. For a 1747cc engine in a big car with the drag of an estate body I'm not complaining. The 155 20v is specced at 86 MPH in 3rd, again the engine has plenty of excess power at that speed in that gear so this is going to be fixed by rev limit and gear ratio. You may see about 91 MPH if your speedo is 5% optimistic

yes my speedos out and its a screwed up senser the one that fits on the gearbox fiat diagnosed and no i was not bull****ing just saying what was indicated on speedo least i know now that the speedo was out and not my eyesight

Limiter in third is about 105MPH indicated on the coop. I've bounced it off there goodstyle before doing 40-100 runs in third  I don't think any of us will beat a corvette's fourth gear though, from standing to 170 !!!
