Hi guys got a prablem with car again. In the last couple weeks my 1st gear has occasionally refused to engage warning me off by a loud and very sudden grinding, making me crap my pants everytime! :( now in the last week if I change into 2nd at low speed it just jumps back into neutral. any ideas as to what this is.
The gearbox was out and resealed 2 months ago. Might i have a warranty claim? :)

Right a quick update. the crunching in 1st is happening more often. a crunching in 2nd has appeared, still jumping out of 2nd aswell, but now reverse sounds like there are is a bag of bolts loose in the gearbox.
I feel it may be terminal.
whats the going rate for a 20v gearbox?
are coop 20v the same? if thats a stupid question i'm sorry.

when it does it try hooking your foot under the clutch pedal and pulling it back up, if it comes back up then it might of been the same as mine, just a little sticky, just keep hooking it up now and again and it becomes natural.

failing that my engine and box are still fine if you wanna take them before she gets scrapped, will have to help me get it all out though

It's been doing the clutch thing for about 6 months. amazing how natural it is to lift it back up after every gear change. Sorry to hear about yours and thanks for the offer bulldog but bristols a bit out of my range.

a crunch is almost always the synchromesh.

gearbox is £75-100 at scrapyard
fitting is £100 at local independant
castrol synthetic api gl5 gear oil is £12 for 3litres

Forgot to update this!
Synchro was burst and 1st and 2nd were damaged apparently.
second hand box was £200
labour was £300

They damaged the steering rack in the process and replaced free of charge meant they had my car for 4 days tho.
Expensive but atleast I'm back on the road.

bloody hell

half a grand for the gearbox!

oh well i guess its just another of the extra costs associated with that 5th cylinder :p

I fell in love with 5 pots when i first heard GroupB Audi Quattros hooning around the Welsh forests during the RAC Rally, many years ago. Your Marea reminds me of those days Beast. Now all you need to do is fit a huge turbo and the wastegate from hell to complete the sonic package :D

PS: Sorry to hear about your gearbox, hope everythings fine now...
