Hi

My 1.6 weekender is now 6 years old with 37k (cant GT it though).

Was thinking of a cambelt/tensioner change plus Aux belts.

Any advice and special tools needed? can you get round special tools if need to?

Price for parts roughly.

Cheers in advance

hi m8
cost me about £50 for the belt and tensioner. u do not need any special tools. when i did mine i was lucky someone had already marked all the timming marks with tipex. u need to take the front wheel off. and it is better if u have a mate help u who as done timming belts before. i was quoted £80 by a mechanic i used to use and this was on the side. it took me and my friend an hour to do and he charged me £20. so where the garages get they prices from is ********.

Its because garages do it properly! There is special tools to align both camshafts and to operate the adjuster correctly. If you dont use the tools the alignment will be out and some engines suffer from unstable idle because of this. Get the job done properly.

Thanks for info.

What is the tool like for tensioner adjuster?

I understand that a garage will do a good job(in most cases) but have been quoted £250 for all belts and tensioner. Which is money i can save, as been competent at DIY mechanics. I dont begrudge people earning a living,we all need to, and if i had extra cash would love to stick it in a main dealer, and save the arse on my self, but thats not the case.

Cheers.

Got it stripped down, but need a big socket looks like 36mm to remove crank pully.

How do you adjust the tensioner?
Any help welcome.

Cheers.

Got it sorted now.
With help from mechanic, need a 36mm socket.

Dead easy to stripdown , remove all the bits, left with bottom pully with 36mm socket to remove. Remove pully, mark upTDC, mark up cam pullies.
Replace iddeler, Cam tensioner(kit £70)

With cam tensioner, the bolt that holds cam tension on slides L-R , to get tension.
Cam tension floates, once fitted on eccentric cam, line up so hole pionts at indicator, use angle circlips to get this, or other DIY tool. Place tool in hole and pull, adjust as required.

Check all marks and engine rotates etc, put back together, fingers crossed it all works as should.

well done
told u there is no need to pay silly money. and as for the tickover been out if u do not use special tools. all i can say is mine ticks over fine.
