Starter motor turns fine, engine "fires" almost immediately, but then splutters and come close to conking out for a few seconds before revving freely as it should. Subsequent starts on same day are fine. Any ideas?

Initial thoughts would be to check and bleed the fuel filter. RS Pilot will give a better answer when he see's this thread.
