i have a 1999 marea weekend 2.0 20v (registerd dec 1999) should it have a red key or not.
The only blue key i have has the remote locking button on the side of the key. also the remote locking isnt working no light so batteries might be flat if i change them will it work or does it need to be re programed.

final thing what side batteries does it take.

thanks neil

To check the battery just pop the key open. At the same time check that the little microswitch inside the key hasn't fallen off, a common fault.
You only need the key for fairly rare ECU faults or to programme new blue keys. You can get your blue key cloned at a good locksmiths for £20 - £30. Good idea to get a spare.

I dont have a red key with my Marea and have never needed it - like Polecat says a spare blue key can be cloned from another blue key at a locksmiths - my local one charges only £15.

Even if you do have an ECU problem it can be re-programmed for £50 - although if you ask Fiat they will say it cant be done because they want £500+ off you.

See www.codeman.org

They quote "We have the ability to reset the ECU to virgin state,Which means the ECU will not have any codes stored in it.This service is ideal when replacing a faulty ECU with a second user one"

The price for resetting the ECU is £50 plus P&P

if u change the batteries will i need to reprogram the remote locking or does it have permenant memory. if it does need reprograming can i do it or is it off to fiat to be ripped off.

thanks neil

You can change the battery in the fob with no problems.

The remote programming system on the car automatically times out a set period after the original keys are programmed in for security reasons. New keys need to be programmed by Fiat. You will never need to do this unless you buy a new remote enabled key.

ok final question what size batteries does it take.

thanks neil

still rebuilding the engine hope to be up and running 1st october,, wey hey!!!

discount the reply by polecat [fiat need to program the remote fob] if you search the forum you will find the sequence to prog your your fob you will also need your remote code, do not ask fiat they charge 15 quid for this service but they do not tell you that they do not keep the code for the immob but they will take your money, you will get the other codes of them like radio key ignition immob code but they will do you no good as the key fob code is different but then your 15 quid has gone and they will not want to know, so give the forum a search you will find the answer. also you do not need the red key for this

Hi fandm,

I have checked my replies and they are all factually correct. If you can point out the reply you are not happy with then I will attempt to rephrase it to remove any confusion. :) It sounds like you have already been through the Fiat 'customer care' loop.

I have previously posted the correct procedure to program in new key fobs on this forum. This is possible and worth trying, however, it is also correct to say that this facility is provided so that you can purchase additional keys.... {"[...] when the car is new. The control unit will subsequently exclude this type of programming to prevent anyone else programming the control unit to 'acknowledge' another remote control.
If, therefore, you ever need a new remote control, go to your nearest Fiat Dealership taking with you the burgandy key, all the keys in your possession, plus the CODE card."}.... Direct quote from users guide.
