Hi,
I am the owner of a 2001 1.6 Marea weekend, I have been working on the blessed beast for a year now and done pretty much everything that can be done with it, many thanks to forum members. However, I have just received my first engine management warning light (yellow engine symbol), I tried to clear it by disconnecting the battery for an hour but it returned. Of course i tried the usual, lambda sensor, spark plugs etc. what i need now is a code reader, but because it is a 2001 obdII won't work because its a three pin connector. Does anyone know how a) connect car to laptop and use software, b) stand alone reader that works with 3 pin connector. Will a 3 pin to obdII adapter actually work, or will it be the same as a 'head gasket sealant'!!:bang:
thanks in advance and any help is better than none

ps to the post above, how do you thank on this forum?

thanks and looks good, but sorry for being a bit thick, what cable do i need is it a 3 pin to USB cable?

I thought the new ones had OBDII (excluding 1.8?).
The ones with red injector light had the 3pin.
USB-KKL and OBD to 3pin adapter has worked for me.

PK-seutu/mis?

hello mate,
its a 2001 1.6 16v. i looked under the drivers side (LHD) and there is a box with what looks like a white connector there, can't really see if its a 3 or 16 (OBD) connector. if it a obd then i will just get a reader 40€ from motonet, if not then I need to buy leads etc, any ideas where to get them from Hki area?

If it has 3pin, it would be attached to the fusebox cover near drivers side strut tower.
Got a 1.6 2000 Brava and it has red injector light for the engine.
Yellow picture of engine and I'm pretty sure its the newer setup.
Should be somewhere under the steeringwheel (behind the fusebox cover in front of your left kneecap)?

cheers mate, found it, and joy of joy its an odb 16 pin connector. went to the local fiat specialists and gave them the car Vin number and they said it was obd compatible. So now its off to buy a code reader and find out why I have a yellow engine light on the dash.
Of course the work starts now:)

Hi Smutty,
Just remember that just because you have an engine management light on it does not necessarily mean there is a fault you have to deal with. These ecu's are like any other computer, all of them occasionally throw up a spurious error message.
My advise is to read, record and reset the light first time round, you may find it doesn't come back. Only if you get the same fault code again in a fairly short time should you get the spanners out.
Good luck :)

lets hope so mate, but with my luck it will be something and a very awkward to get at job as well:)
but at least it keeps me off the streets!

thanks to all the people for helping me, so far! Just to recap, a 2001 1.6 marea weekend is OBD2 compatible, the socket is under the steering wheel. Bought quicklynks T40 code reader and it gave me a p0420 code, catalyst blah blah blah . Cleared the code because I know the exhaust is blowing and will fix it when the weather improves.
Final question, can i use an error code reader when the engine is running to check for a misfire when idling, I have a lumpy idle and the engine surges sometimes, starts to race when in gear. Changed the throttle cable and cleaned the body so lost as to what is causing it, any help appreciated.
Neverth, asun Vantalla!

Hi again,

I think you will find that simple code readers will not work when the engine is running, mine certainly doesn't.
I think it might be that they are not sophisticated enough to deal with the changing readings that you would get if the engine is running, only the fault codes stored in the ecu.

Good luck with your lumpy tickover, the only experience I have had with that problem was on a Brava 1.2 and the problem there was the motorised throttle assembly. Cleaned and adjusted several times by a Fiat dealer in Greece (at 10 euros the first time, free the next two! Good luck finding prices like that over here) but in the end had to buy a new one. :)
