Hello Chaps

Just spent most of June changing the clutch on my TD100 Marea Weekend...what a job!

Anyhow I finished putting her back together yesterday and she drove like a dream."YYYYeeess!" I said punching the air in celebration. Then I looked down to the dash, "NNNoooo" I said as I saw the battery light come on. I pulled up back home and the car wouldn't restart and the battery dead.

OK I thought, charge up the battery and test out a replacement the next day which I did. Both batteries, original and borrowed replacement giving out 12V. Connected the replacement which fired up first time but not the second and battery light still on. Put original back which fired up first time and still does but battery light still on. Checked output voltage while running and still only 12V which would indicate faulty alternator or connection.

My thoughts are that it would be very unlucky for an alternator to go at the same time as the clutch and that during the clutch change which was a major job, I have disturbed or not reconnected a wiring loom correctly. I've had a look at the wiring again but can't see anything astray although difficult to tell. Also access to the alternator is restricted although it appears that a lead goes from the alternator to the starter motor which was a real b**ch to undo to get to the gear box.

I'm not sure whether to take it to an auto electrician for them to advise or take off the alternator and replace/overhaul.

After a month off the road I'm desperate to get her back on again as I keep on haveing to borrow, beg and steal lifts to work. Any advice would be very welcome!

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Restorer

Exactly what the auto electrician said so now will investigate. Access to the starter motor a real SOB though. Thanks for the tip and I'll let you know.

Nice one mate.

Stripped away some of the gubbings above the starter motor and jacked her up and lo and behold I'd connected the alternator cable to the solenoid terminal!

Traced the cable from the battery and refitted the cable to this terminal (under the black plastic cap) and hey presto.....no battery light and she's a runner!

Lesson leant, to keep track and label all connections (that goes for bolts n nuts too!) when taking things apart.

I shall put up a post of the clutch change in a couple of days for any other Marea owners.

Big thumbs up! (y)
