Hi guys!
Been doing some searching but none of the results seems to fit my kind of drive shafts?

Im changing the clutch in a Marea Weekend 1.8 16v 1997, and both drive shafts are loose at the wheel end of the shafts, but Im a little bit puzzled how to remove them from the gearbox. The inner CV joint boots are fitted to the gearbox, and all the other cars Ive been working on have had the boots fitted on the shafts.

On the left side of the gearbox (drivers side, it's a Swedish car) I can see three 13mm bolts holding a plate to the gearbox just behind the boot. Should I remove this and the shaft is loose?

On the passenger side I can't see any plate, but the boot is held to the gearbox with a clamp.

So can anyone give me a hint on how to remove these?

Thanks!

//Anders.

To me it sounds like youre describing the 1.6, it has the boots on gearbox as it has internal CV joint, also it has bearing on the CV-boot to keep the gearbox oil in and let the shaft spin (the boot doesnt spin).
1.8 has flanges the CV-joints are attached to and simply unbolt (ribe bolts I think).

If its a 1.6, you could try removing it while driveshafts installed, remove the gearboxmount and stuff to make it fit out of there.
Also if its a 1.6 change the boots, if necessary, while its off, had to replace mine as they started leaking transmission oil.

Thanks for the fast reply! :)

Well, it's an import from Germany to Sweden (it's made in Italy. It has the mechanical clutch with clutchwire), so I guess anything is possible! :D

Or perhaps its a 1.6 gearbox on this 1.8... Anyhow, it has the boots on the gearbox.

So how do I remove the shafts? (lets pretend it's a 1.6 since it has the boot-on-gearbox version) Is it enough to just remove the inner clamp holding the boot and then just pull the shaft out?

If you cant take it out with the safts attached, you need to drain the oil and unclamp if from gearbox. Put masking/electrical tape or something to keep the thing from falling apart once its removed.

Okay. So in other words, the only thing holding the shafts to the gearbox is the clamps for the inner side of the boots?
