Hello all, first post and I'm not a mechanic or anything, so please be gentle!

A question if I may, about my Marea Weekend 1.9 JTD (SLX) 2001.

Recently it has been losing revs and acceleration in all sorts of situations - coming off roundabouts and go up inclines especially.

Sometimes I can have my foot flat to the floor in second/third and the revs don't go above about 9000 and then all of a sudden, after what seems like a lifetime (probably up to 10 seconds sometimes) it will kick in, and loads of black smoke will pour out of the exhaust.

Not good when you have HGVs behind you and people probably think you just put it in the wrong gear and will soon get back up to speed...

Anyways, my good ol' Dad who used to be a mechanic, but is now disabled and is limited to what he can help check managed to change the fuel filter for me today suspecting maybe it was clogged and perhaps there's water sloshing about in the mix as its going through the injectors? [The filter hadn't been replaced in its 87k miles its done from new].

I did start off with just putting some of that diesel cleaner stuff in the tank and have tried to burn off the soot to clear the injectors, but after all this, I still have the problem (although it is now somewhat less frequent after the filter has been changed).

Does anyone have any experience of this or any suggestions as to what may be wrong?

My Dad suggested taking it to a fuel pump / injection specialist, but they want about £70 just to tell me how much they think it might cost in a worst case scenario after inspecting the various potential parts.

Many thanks!

No clues anyone? I've now noticed it also goes very sluggish after turning a bend and takes some time to recover. Will change the air filter tomorrow to see if this helps.

Sounds to me like a faulty glow plug or plugs. If they haven't been renewed they could really make for poor acceleration and unburned fuel coming out the exhaust. Get a garage to test the computer to see if there is a faulty glow plug. If it has change the complete set. Your be running like new then.

hello , and welcome,
do you run a Marea..? what model..??

old post = 6 months old, but thanks for the input,

Plugs normally only effect initial start-up, (apart from the cut-off if a fault is detected..!!) annoying / dangerous in my mind that one..!!
