Hi Everyone!

Took my 2.0 20V in for its MOT - failed??????

The faults were: Steering Rack, which needs replacing, Tie Rod ends, need replacing and two other minor faults.

What surprises me is that the steering rack would need to be replaced. Apparently it is worn/damaged???? There is nothing wrong with the steering that I am aware of, apart from a clunk occassionally when turning the steering wheel while stationery.

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to do a job like this? I am being quoted about £600 (which includes £289 for the new steering rack, I am supplying the tie rod ends)

To me, the price for the rack sounds excessive, but I am not sure, so would welcome any opinions.

Rog.

Can't imagine thats an easy job, 'specially with the 20v Engine in. I assume its a case of taking the front sub frame out, to replace the rack.

Its quite a big job. You have to remove the engine mounting bolts and lift the engine a touch, remove the exhaust front pipe and disconnect the gear selector link as well as the usual suspects.
Don't forget to centre the wheel before refitting and get your wheels aligned at your local garage,

it not that bad realy.
1. remove the exchaust from the front to the cat
2. remove the engine mount
3. remove the 4 bolts that hold it on and the joint for the streeting and ur 2 track rodends take of the pipes.
4. not sure if u have to take of the gear linkage but
5. the hardest part will be the get it of the at the joint for the streeting column

but should,nt be any where near £300 of labour more like £100, price some of ur local garages
