Hi, I have a lovely squealing belt on my car (A 1.9 JTD) which is really getting on my nerves. Whilst changing a headlight bulb today (which is a heck of a lot harder than it should be thanks to some dumb design on the cover placement next to a piece of bodywork), I took a look at the side of the engine to see if I could locate the alternator and adjust it's tension to take up the slack on the belt.

My car at some point had the AC Pump taken out of the belt loop as the bearing appears to have gone when you spin it, but looking down the side of the engine I can see the main belt wrapped around 4 pulleys but I have no idea what they are.

Can someone tell me the location of the alternator and if it is easy to adjust. I am hoping it is not at the bottom of the engine and requiring me to go under the car to do like my last sodding car did....

Just to give you an idea I have attached a pic of the engine itself in case it varies on model to model.

Thanks guys

Max

Hi mate, If you look at the top left of the engine in the picture, and then look down, you will see the alternator.

The JTD should have an automatic tensioner that you cant adjust, but by the sounds of it someone has messed about with yours so there MAY be some adjustment. To get to iy, you will need to remove the front driverside wheel.

Hope that helps,
Alan

HI Alan.

That does help a lot thanks. I will go outside now and take a look at it and see how practical it is to do. Not something I can do with the light fading now but maybe next weekend I can.

Thanks for the heads up on it.

Okay seen it. Following on from what Alan said, if the alternator is at full tension and cannot adjust itself anymore, then the belt needs replacing. Is changing the belt a simple job or is it a complete pig to do?

Just wondering as my MOT is not until May and otherwise I would get it done at the same time.

Thanks
Max

Hi mate,

Either the belt has stretched and needs replacing

OR

The auto tensioner is knackered and needs replacing

OR

The alternator bearings are knackered.

If the belt or tensioner or both need replacing, then its an easy job to do. The belt is about £8 and the tensioner about £30

If the alternator bearings are knackered, then obv its a bigger job. Especially as the alternator is difficalt to get to in order to be removed.

Can you narrow down where the noise is coming from? IS it a sqeak or a squeel?

It is a squeal, constant when the engine is running. Typical of a belt slipping on the pulley wheels. Get louder as you rev the engine/drive faster.
