Has anyone heard of the following?

Driving at 70mph the other day, there was a thump from the engine, loss of power, smoke from exhaust, loss of power steering etc. Coasted to stop - turning key just gave electronic noise i.e. no turnover. I thought that the cam belt had gone.

Got towed to garage, where upon taking off cover etc, discovered to my surprise that cam belt was intact (expected it to be wrapped round crank) and tight i.e. the cam belt had not gone! Confused.....

Have looked at 2 of the valves and the pistons are definitely down and there are a couple of tappits that appear to have sheared. Have stopped mechanic investigating further since he thinks car not worth repairing. Having just had a brand new clutch fitted a month ago, I wanted to see if anyone here has any idea what has happened and whether it is fixable and at what sort of cost?

Could have been belt slipping i.e. tensioner issue.

What you doing with car if you decide 'not worth repair'?

are you sure the timing belt is ok ?. If you can see valve train damage you can almost be certain the timing has slipped. belt can look fine but dodgy tensioner can have caused it to slip.. try turning it over slowly with a spanner on the crank pulley.. if it stops dont force it as valves are hitting pistons.
