My friend has a Marea 100 1.6 16v that has a misbehaving temp dial. The temp intermitently goes into the red and then comes back down 5 - 10 later. The car suffers no loss of performance and no other warning lights come on. Its still under warranty and has been back twice for diagnostic tests but they have found nothing wrong. Any ideas/suggestions would be most welcome.

I would have them clean all connectors that are between the temp dial and the sensor. If that doesn't help, have them replace the wiring of the temp sensor.

It's always the same: during a diagnostic test they can't find anything wrong, so there can't be anything wrong, right?

The way I see it: if anything does go wrong, and the engine overheats, your mate will ignore the temp dial and burn up his engine. Costly and dangerous.

Tell them to check the right dash earth. Earth or continuity fault is most likely cause.

Their diagnositc is just a computer they connect up to see the fault codes.

Abuse the service center at the dealer with arogance about why they can't actually do mechanical checks/stuff like a mechanic is suposed to. I hate this new electrical way of _fixing_ s**t - older engines made so much more sense.

you cant test the inst cluster on a marea with the diagnostic computer, also its not just a computer that reads fault codes.
it can do all sorts of funky stuff :D
