I have recently bought a Fiat Marea estate car but only found out after purchasing that the car needs a master key to get further keys cut. The car was only supplied with a blue slave key. Can the ECU be reprogrammed by third parties ie not Fiat.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dave

Sticking 'Transponder key' in a search engine brought up these, amongst others. This isn't a reccommendation, as I haven't used them myself.

Cloning a key ie: blue key - blue key can be done by Timpsons in most high streets and is fine as long as you're sure no-one is going to nick your car with your lost key. They charge about £25 but I'm trying to negotiate a special rate for FiatForum.
If you need to alter the keys that the ECU responds to, ie: remove a lost key so that it will no longer start the car. You need the red key, they can be made from a blue key apparently, but I've not seen it done and everyone I enquire about it with is very vague as to how this works with the ECU.
So if you only need a blue key and you don't think your lost one is a threat to your cars security, Timpsons is a good bet

Hi,

I work as an auto locksmith and have specialist machinery that can reprogram a Fiat ECU.

Not sure where you are based, but I know other auto locksmiths in the UK that may be able to help if you are too far away.

You can find more details on my website theautolocksmith.co.uk

Best of luck.:)

I've got a 1.9 TD75 SX weekend and I only got two keys with the car, one blue and one red. I took the blue one to Timpsons in Stockport to get a spare made, based on what I'd read here.

The guy rambled on about the only way to get a copy was to take it to a Fiat dealer so they can put the car on a rolling road, start it up, get the code, switch it off, start it up again, get another code and then they could clone it from that!

A few days later, while trawling through the handbook, I noticed that the blue key I have is actually a remote key, but it appears that the battery is dead as the LED doesn't come on when I press the button.

Is it just a case of replacing the battery or will I need to have it reset or re-coded?

the timpsons guy is full of crap, they can copy the key. only encrypted keys can not be copied, and your key isnt encrypted.

they cant make you a new remote at timpsons, but you can replace the battery or repair it yourself with no need for any programming.

Thanks for the reply jug.

I've noticed before that the guy at Timpsons is a lazy get anyhow, so I shouldn't have been surprised about that.

Is it easy to change the battery in the key? Is there a guide anywhere? I saw the info on resoldering some parts inside.

Depending on what's causing my latest problem with overheating and the cost of repairing it, it might not be an issue. :(

overheating without coolant loss is almost always thermostat, simply check if the hose from thermostat to rad is hot when it overheats, if it isnt then you know thermostat is stuck shut.

if the hose is hot then maybe its your fan that is the problem, it should start at a little over half way up the temp gauge.

also consider a crap rad, if the fins are rotten or damaged or missing then a new rad will make a big difference.

if the overheating is associated with coolant loss then head gasket leak is possible (do compression test). also check for visible leaks at hoses and for signs of a leaking water pump gasket (water coming from bottom of timing belt cover).
