Here the real history of diesel UNIJET (Bosch after buying design patents from Fiat named it common rail)...

http://www.crf.it/news/I_C/2002-6.pdf

1997 The first car in the world with a Diesel common rail (Unijet) was the Alfa Romeo 156 1,9 JTD [uniJet Turbo Diesel]

It's in Italian but I will try to find something in English....

Yep, and the fact that they can easily be adapted to run on Bio-Diesel. A source of energy, in theory, that will never run out. And it'll be cheap(er).

In fact, I bet some Fiat drivers are actually doing this now. I know VW diesels are quite tolerant to it.

topgear ran an old volvo on cooking oil and it worked, oil just had to be heated a bit and filtered. can't believe this especially as cooking oil goes all sticky but apparently it works and the AA verified it.

They also add a solvet. White spirit type stuff. This stops the stickyness.

From various bits on the net it seems people basically do a 60% cooking oil and 40% normal diesel. Sounds about right to me.
