There is more than enough with 5 gears when the engine is this small. You'll have to shift gears all the time. Even with 5 gears the shifts come often. It will propably not affect insurance (at least not in Norway - the engine size and effect is still about the same), and with this little engine i doubt you'll make cereal of your gear box, so no - it won't cost more to fix.

In my opinion it isn't better than the standard. 6 gears are for Abarths.

Well, if the 5 first gears on the 6 speed gear box have the same ratios as the 5 speed gear box, it's actually a good thing. Then you won't have 6000 rpm doing 180 on the motorway.

180 km/h !!!

My insurance stayed exactly the same when I went from a X plate Punto Mia to a 53 plate Stilo 6 speed, so I would guess that there would be no change for you at all.

It depends what car he's getting. If he's getting one of the old 55EL's then yes there isn't really much advantage over the 5 speed box, just a quieter motorway gear and slightly better acceleration. Yes it will cost more to service, just. Insurance is unchanged.

If he's getting the mk2 Sporting (which it sounds like as he says 1.2) then it's insurance is group 7, teh box has no bearing, and here the 6-speed box improves performance noticably by keeping the engine in the sweet zone.. It's a good gearbox and you shouldn't be put off by worrying what may go wrong with it. Any gearbox can develop issues with age, this one is no more or less susceptible.

A 6-speed 'box shouldn't really affect servicing cost; the only gearbox-related service item is oil, and a 6-speed uses the same oil as a 5-speed. The only worry is that on the Mk1 Puntos, the 6-speed box is quite rare so parts may be hard to find and/or expensive. It's more common on the newer cars.
