What tools would I need to check engine compression?

If I asked a garage to do it for me how much am I looking at and what do they have to do to check?

What are the main causes of loss of compression?

If it were concluded that I had low compression what parts would I need to fix it?

Thanks :)

Compression Gauge Set is an indispensable diagnostic tool for determining engine mechanical condition.

loss can be head gasket
worn piston rings pistons or cylinder
valve or valve seat damage
hole in piston

you would use other symptons to rule out what its not

you may find this a good read
