Not sure if it is old news, but just in case it isn't:

New Legislation

I was going to get my windows tinted, but if the law is so unsure of itself and I may or may not get stopped, I don't think I will bother.

I've had two quotes so far. In each I asked for all windows, except the windscreen.

1) £275
2) £190 (from the guys that supplied the above article) However, I think I might give them a miss, if the this guys tinting is as bad as his grammer. [:0]

dere craige,
in responce to your e-mail, it is possable to tint your car, it takes a day, this would cost £190, and comes gareteed for life. if you require any more info please ring us on 01512075777

thank you,
kevin grimes

It still seems a little unclear (gerrit ;) ) to me. I found this which confirms what many other people have been saying. But it doesn't look up to date, including the new legislation as of 1st January 2004. [V]

I think you have to rely on the company tinting your windows to know what they are doing and applying tints that are within the law. [xx(]

I would imagine that this mainly applies to the tinted films that are stuck on to windows, rather than tinted glass that is fitted. In law, interpretation of the law will lead to guilt/innocence. If you inform the garage that tints your glass and they have had their products inspected, you should be fine. Also, ask an officer to inspect and what will most probably happen is he'll send you the paperwork and never show.|):D

Did you have the fish? No...I ate it.

My interpretation of the small print is that it applies to any tint, whether it be film, sprayed or manufactured into the glass itself.

The glass in my car is Pilkington Climaglass, it is already partially tinted. I imagine factory fitted windows are well within the law. :)

Ok... in one of the paragraphs in that it says that they will alter the FRONT tints free of charge. does this mean that you can still tint the rear windows (behind the driver) as much as we want? specially the rear windscreen, before this was allowed to be completly blacked out provided we had mirrors.

If this is the case them i'm home free heh, I wanted to tint mine with medium/light black on the front and dark black all around the back.

Its always been the law that anything over a light smoke at the front windows was illegal, just not majorly enforced.

Anything behind the driver you can go as dark as you want. (Its just like you are driving a van). If your backs are really dark and you have light front, they will still appear quite dark as the interior in general will be darker.

TBH, i'm not quite sure what this new law means, it seems exactly the same as the old one?!?! I'm only guessing that before it was descretionary to the policeman seeing it, you can now be stopped just for having any tints with no way of a comeback.

If you drive past police and don't want to make it blatant, just ;letting down your window a bit to let in some light, will light up the interior of your car, making the tints easier to see through, rather than trying to get the whole window down which might be a but sus :)

As for mirror tints, they didn't used to be illegal as they didn't actually impair your sight (if i remember correctly, it was just a bright from the inside)..... just don't quote me on that :D

BAD BRAVO

I emailed the guys that offered the lower quote (£190) and asked them the following question:

Thanks for your reply to my last email...I just have one more
question for you...

After reading a 'News' article on your website about legislation regarding window tints from 1st January, 2004, I am a little concerned. Which of your tints will I be able to have fitted and still remain within the law?

To which they replied:

technacly none foreward of the b post, but we have spoke to police and dont think they will be botherd

So it still looks like tints forward of the B-Post are a big no-no! You may get away with it, but if your local bobby got out of the wrong side of his bed, you may get done.

I am still put off by their bad spelling, though

Hi,

My brother-in-law is a traffic cop [or was, is now a police trainer for motorbikes and cars - what a cool job].

When I had my Ulysse film tinted, he wondered why I hadn't had the front done as well. I suppose I wasn't sure of the legality at the time. As an officer, he will only pull over if he can't see through the fronts i.e. dark tinting ok-ish but limo tint is a no-no. However, I will speak to him about the new legislation and see what the intepretation is. No doubt different forces will have different policies.

Stuart

PS Had mine film-tinted by a guy called John Begley in Brackley - he does all the Mercs/Voyagers in the area. The 5 back windows were done for £260+VAT - job was fantastic, not a single bubble or cutting error. The car was supposed to come already tinted, but Fiat UK messed up on order. The dealer ended up having to fork out.

How much do you trust people with spelling and grammar like that :S

I am not saying this for sure, obviously there could be exceptions, but it isn't a very professional company that spells words like "technically", "technacly" and "spoke" instead of spoken. If you do go with them and get it done, of course I hope it goes fine and their general English skills might not be representative of their skills in tinting.

I hope I made no simple English mistakes in this post because I would be a massive hypocrite if so. I assure you that they are all typing errors... LOL

Paul

I can't see why you would have to spell rite to fit window tint, if you was after sign writing then i could understand your concern.

Please do not Email or PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead. Your reply may help someone else. Thank you

LOL, maybe you're right. But it is a bit reassuring if a company uses a spell checker before sending an email out. I don't know your work area but whatever you do i am sure you wouldn't send out a letter or an advert without first checking it. It's just good business sense.

Again, I am not doubting that this guy can tint windows well. Maybe it is some prejudice within me in which case I am feeling like a bad person now... :S
