I have told Dunc and he doesnt mind me stealing his thread idea  :p so no complaints :D ]

So anyway, If you dont already know, Last week I sold my lovely little Cinquecento sporting and purchased a 1988 E reg MK1 Fiat Uno Turbo.

tred.jpg

The shell is on 125000 miles but the engine had a rebuild around 70000 miles so the engine is good for around 55000 miles. its had a recent full service and seems in good condition and runs very well at the moment although I will be getting it tuned up properly on a rolling road soon (we need to arange a day and time alex/dunc :p).

The exterior bodywork itself is generaly good. paint work is genraly scratch free except some nasty children keyed the front wing the day the previous owner got it (not nice :( ). The exterior paint work is the least of my worries though as after ive attacked the rust and sorted what needs sorting, its going for a respray :D so key marks can wait.

Known rust patches so far are :

  • bottom of drivers door (bad)
  • Bottom of passenger door (ok)
  • surrounding the filler car (doesnt look too bad from the outside)
  • bottom corner of drivers rear quater panel (indicates that rust behind filler cap is probably worse than it looks)
  • bonnet (stone chip gone bad but replacing bonnet anyway)

These are the places that are immediatly visable. I havent yet stripped out the interior for a look yet but will be doing today and will report back with more pics later.

I'll be restoring any rust I can myself (if holes in non major places can be fibreglassed etc) but anything in a major place (eg, holding the car together) that isnt surface will have to goto a garage to be cut out and re-welded.

I'll be spraying as I go so will tackle the interior first and then the exterior which ill just primer (will look a mess :( ) and then its off to a shop to be sprayed :D

HOPEFULLY I would like this complete by Auto Italia Stanford Hall (y)

Will keep updating as I make progress (y)

yay another resto thread! race ya! lol

seriously tho matey, good luck with it all and i know where i am when u need help! the only rust really worrying me is the filler cap area, as its a bad area for rust behind the scenes if u know what i mean! have a good long proper look today and i will be catching back up with the thread later to see how ur getting on!

try and get as much of the rust/holes welded up and not fibre glassed as it'll last longer welded, but thats just what id do personally! but have fun, and just remember where everything goes :p :D

Dunc

edit : oh yeah, we'll deffo sort something out for a RR day up here!

okay so Ive started now :D I only just came in becuase its started hailing and didnt want to be out in it :)

Set out by first removing the seats and carpet and taking out the spare wheel and jack etc.

The rust here isnt terrible.. ok its worst than perfect but could still be alot worse than it is! There are a few 4mm ish holes in the wheel well as well as the circular drainage bit missing so thats probably where most of the damp has got in causing the surface rust in the well (luckily hasnt gone all the way though the metal yet so should be repairable without much hastle.

next was to take off the arch liners. Was really dreading this bit and expected the worst (mounts being detatched from the body).

Plesently suprised. Ok again it is rusty and far from perfect but its alot better than it could be! Now the problem here is that do I get the whole inner arch replaced or just get that area rewelded?

Decided to also give it a good cleanup with a hoover and a damp cloth to take off some of the stains etc.

Looks alot better now and can actually see whats rusty and whats not.

Anyway, thats my report for now! im off out to halfrauds to pick up some bits and ill get back to work :slayer:

As you can see ive resprayed the whole floor. I didnt take up the soundproofing as im not stripping the car out. Im still going to be keeping the seats in etc. all of the rust in the previous pics was luckily just surface rust but there are a few spots that ive sprayed over anyway that will need to be re sanded next week when im off work.

looks far better now anyway. will get the wheel well welded soon too and respray that.

Re: Bushboy's Uno Turbo Restoration Thread

I agree with dunc - looking smart, but get that rust sorted asap. Looking at it, it doesnt need a full new iner arch, BUT it will need a patch or else it'll end up getting weak and you comprimse sending your wheel into your boot if cornering hard as im sure you know :p.

So what are the plans? I have read above but it hasnt really sunk in, are you doing a 'dunc' ?!? :p :p Meaning, are you stripping it out completely???

Re: Bushboy's Uno Turbo Restoration Thread

good work, need to get mine done, but the previous owner built a fibre glass boot build and built it directly on the boot floor so it will need to be cut out. i can kind of guess why he did it like that though so i wont be surprised if theres a lot of rust under there!

Re: Bushboy's Uno Turbo Restoration Thread

good work!!!!

Krust is one of the better (more price than how well it works) convertors. And I doubt it will come back thru that.

Shall I start 'restoring' my volvo, as I am starting to feel left out:(

Re: Bushboy's Uno Turbo Restoration Thread

even with loose rust the convertor EATS IT:eek: goes from whatever colour (often white or black) to the gunkiest brown you have ever seen, then just wash off with a bucket or hose :)rolleyes: water=rust:rolleyes: ), does away with the need for wire brushs!!! still advisable thought to get as much off as you can before you kurust up(y)
