Hope someone can help me, the Mrs has a P Reg Punto 55 S. She has noticed that now its winter the heater dont seem to get hot at all, just blows cold air even after 30mins of driving. She noticed last night that the light to say engine overheat came on, but this was only that night, the heater problem has been for the past 3 weeks or so now. Not sure if it has ever worked. If anyone cold shed some light it would be great, and the Mrs would be very pleased, and im sure I will end up fixing it this weekend in the cold.

Welcome to the forum.

The cold heater problem would sound like a stuck open thermostat, but in that case the overheating light wouldn't come on. Could be a huge airlock in the system - at this time of year especially I would try changing the thermostat, adding fresh antifreeze, and making sure the system is bled of air properly.

Just a daft one, but are you sure the linkages between the hot/cold knob and the heater assembly are all connected and working?

The linkage seems to be working, i mean i can feel restance as i turn the knob, and you can hear things moving so sounds good. Is there an easy way of test the thermostat at all?

the thermostat got changed on mine shortly before i bought my car, failed attempt at fixing the temperature gauge.. i fail to see how it would've helped but there we go!

As Pete says you may have an airlock or the heat exchanger may be blocked. I don't know how your Punto is joined together, but....
Get some radiator purge/flush and follow the instructions, drain the system then put a hosepipe in the system and give it a good flush out. Keep the heater switched off until the water runs clear to stop any dirt getting into the exchanger. If you can get at it then it would be better to flush the exchanger against the normal flow of coolant. Then it's 'just' a case of refilling the system, bleeding everywhere you can, and turning the engine every now and then until the header tank level stays the same. Keep checking the level for a few days and don't forget the anti-freeze. [8D]
.......
To test a 'stat you will need a lamp or buzzer, some wire, a battery and a cup of hot water. Wire everything up and dunk the 'stat into the hot water. Watch/listen and be amazed...or not as the case may be.

If you're tooled up you can use the ohm setting on a multi-meter.

But as Jonna says by the time you got this all sorted out you may as well have fitted a new one.;)

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :D
