Not sure, but bump starting a petrol should be avoided due to causing damage to the CAT, or is that a myth?!
I dont think its a myth. Petrol in your cat will react with your precious metals.
As for bump starting a diesel I'd reccomend jump-starting rather than bump starting. This coming from an ex 1.9 TD SX owner.

bump starting wont get your glowplugs hot
Depends on the engine as far as I am aware, some engines won't run without hot glowplugs, be it 30 outside or -5.

Some engines won't go at all without the glowplugs, some will after a bit of churning on the starter, and some don't even have glowplugs (the old 2.5 Transit diesels don't have 'em).

If the battery is absolutely dead you can't bump start it because the alternator needs some power to build up a magnetic field in its coils in order to produce elctricity.
Best way to start is to use a battery pack.

if its difficult to start, spray some bradex cold start down/up the air intake. this usually gets diesels going as long as the glow plugs are working.
The only problem with using something such as easy start or simliar, is that the engine will purely NOT start without it from then on. They coat the internals in a layer of carbon stronger than diesel ca take off that almost prevents the engine from running without a spray to start it if used frequently, and can only be lifted by a cleaner additive. I would do as suggested and jump it, if you dont have jump leads someone else near you most deffinatly will.
A diesel is harder to start if the battery is flat as said as the glow plugs need time to heat to start the reaction off that will fire the cylinders, and running unburnt diesel via bumping is bad for the cat too (again as said) its minimal but frequent use can really knacker them.
Just try Charging your battery before bumping, then if not, jump start and again if not get a new battery and glow glow plugs if its naff to start.

if you use easy start, the engine does not require it after just one squirt or so. you have to use it quite a bit for the engine to get "hungry" for it. most engines will not start from cold[the colder the worse it is] due to either poor compression, inactive glow plugs, or pump worn or mis-timed. bump starting will fill the cat with neat fuel. this will quickly destroy the cat. i would check the glow plugs and have a compression test done. without good compression,a diesel will always be difficult to start. i hope this helps. nothing worse then "non starters"punto_jr_sx75 said:
