I'm pretty sure that very early series 2 production had the lights in the grill too but quite quickly changed to having them on the wings - Must check in that manual, sorry if that makes me sound like a "know it all!

Amazingly I realize I have no recollection of ever working on a Defender.

Just checked this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_series

Thought I was right about the lights in early series 2s

Na, Na, Nynana! Sorry, I'll go and stick my head down the toilet now for that disgusting display of righteousness!

1947 First land rover was called.... land rover, only anticipated production of a few years following end ww2.lights in grill.

People kept wanting them.
Redesign, oh bugger what shall we call it? What about land rover series 2, ok then from now on we will call the first one the series 1.
Early series 2 lights in grill, metal mesh grill.
Later series 2 , blast what shall we call it as it's not that different? 2A ok call it series 2A and put headlights in wings.

1972 update series 3 plastic grill no more impromptu bbqs using that.

Around 1983 and 1984 massive redesign using coil spring suspension, discs on front

Carp we can't call this a series land rover..... Just call the little one a land rover 90
And the big one land rover 110. Ok then will do.

Around 1987, That was dull name choice sex it up a bit. Ah I know Defender!
Will put carp plastic door handles on at same time and stop galvanizing the body cappings , that will save a few pence and they are lasting too long galvanised.

That's off top of my head so exact years may be slightly off.

My first car was a 1974 Fiat X 1/9. Love the mid engine and the way it holds the road. Years later carburetor problems and rust. It's was parked for 3-4 years.
Then I wanted to buy another Fiat X 1/9. Summer driven only. I bought a 1981 Fiat X 1/9. 1st year fuel injection. The car was 5 years old about 60K on it, mint! I loved driving this car every summer.
1990 settled down got married started a family bought a house. Didn't have time for the X 1/9. Park it for a year or 2. Wasn't willing to give it up.
My parent's loved that car. My Dad said you should do something with the Fiat. Dad don't have time for that right now, kids are young. But Dad you love that car too. Your retiring soon. You take the car enjoy it during your retirement. I got rid of the 74 X 1/9 and gave the 81 x 1/9 to my dad. He kept it for the next 15 years. He gave it back to me in 2007. I still have it. It's still in mint condition. The KM are starting to get up there, but it still runs great. I'll rebuild the engine when I retire which is coming in the next 5-6 years.
