Hello people, new to this forum, sorry if I've posted in the wrong section. I really need some help as I've got a Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet. The car recently started popping out of 5th gear so I've taken it to my local garage and they've sent the gearbox off to a specialist.
The specialist has the gearbox for 2 weeks but he can't seem to get the parts, as he quoted to me today it's going to cost £400 just for the parts and his labour on top.
After having a lengthy chat with him, he's advised me the parts i need are the 5th gear, the synchronizer and outer sleeve for the the 5th gear.
I've contacted Fiat and they've advised me the parts will cost £260 inc VAT. Which is roughly the same cost as the a second hand gearbox plus I've got to pay him £186 + VAT for his labour and then the garage £260 for removal and refit for the gearbox and the cost of a new clutch, its getting into a very costly job.
A friend of mine works at Ford and he gets Ford parts at cost price. So it hit me that i what if the Ford Ka shares the same gearbox. I've contacted him and contacted a Fiat dealer they've sent me images over of the breakdown of the parts that i need. The Ford parts which according to the images are coming at around £90 which is miles cheaper than the Fiat ones. The one issue I'm having is the 5th gear on the Ford database shows 36 teeth, whereas the on the Fiat database shows 47 teeth ok the outer cog and 36 on the inner side. The pictures on the ford sheet print out i have aren't very clear whereas the information on the Fiat is very clear. Speaking to both Ford and Fiat technicians they all seem to be saying the both the same gearbox and engine but taking to another mechanic he's advise me that the gear ratios could be different even though the casing for both look the same. I've attached 2 images of the pictures I've received. The clearer image with no writing is the Fiat database image and the other is the Ford print off. If anyone has any knowledge and any advice i would very much appreciate it as I'm struggling and if i buy from Ford they won't return the parts and Fiat are being funny about their returns policy saying make sure you're getting the right part.
