Looks a little "Maserati-esque" at the front end to me. Still a big step forward from the current mess.
You're right, it does look like the Maserati 3200/ 4200 which is nothing to be ashamed of!
I love it and think this makes up for the boring Mk2 (even though I owned one, I never 'enjoyed' it like my Mk1), and awful 2.5 face-lift. I have seen a few piccies now of the usual Max-power type shots and the 'normal' versions, and I think the normal versions also look very smart.
As for the engines, the 1.2 8v 65bhp makes total sense to release first as this will be the engine the majority of Punto owners will buy (how many 8v Active's are out there
). That or a diesel model so they are getting them to the market early. The 1.4 8v is a total curiosity to me, and can only assume it is a 'gap filler' until the 1.2 16v engine to be shared with the Corsa is released.
Why they didn't go the whole hog and introduce the 95bhp 1.4 16v from the Stilo/ current Punto and Idea I don't know. The 8v engine is likely to need more work than the 1.2 16v to meet euro 4 (8 valves are naturally less efficient that 16)
As for those who think it looks like a Corsa, you might want to open your eyes
Many cars share platforms and engines yet feel unique. Despite sharing 60% (by value) of all components, the Mitsubishi Colt and smart forfour feel totally different to drive. This is largely down to steering callibration, damper and spring rates which, in the case of the Punto/ Corsa are likely to favour a softer set up for ride comfort on the Corsa and a Firmer set up for sharp handling on the Punto. Of course all of this hard work will all go out of the window when some owners start 'dropping' their car in the misconception it makes the car handle better. Oh how I laugh to myself when I hear this...
