A mate of mine is looking at getting either a late mk1 punto or an early mk2, does anyone know of any bad things to watch out for on either of them or any advice on buying for either ?

a late low mileage mk1 better than a high mileage mk2 imo, on mk1 look for rusty sump, should have a red key as well. radius arm bushes, and rear sub frame bushes are known to go early.

Depends what's wanted, If safety is important then a Mk2 is better. Otherwise, is styling important, and budget. What kind of performance etc. I'd suggest one with a reasonable milage, so it hasn't only always pottered around town. Check for the head gasket going, mayo-like stuff in the oil, and make sure all the electrics work.
