Hi guys.

Just wondered what you all thought about the Chrysler/Lancia Ypsilon compared to Fiats 500?

I test drove one today and quite liked it but I did have my mind set on a 500.

I'm a guy in his late 20's looking for a funky little car but can't decide what will suit me best.

Let me know what you all think.

Thanks a lot....

Hi thanks for the reply.

Oh.. Straight defiantly straight! My wife has a 500 and I love nicking it to run down the chippy! Lol.

I drive a bravo at the moment thats getting a bit long in the tooth now. I fancy something newer & a bit more stylish. And defiantly itatlian. I would probably buy a Alfa Mito or Guiletta if I could afford one but I can't.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I agree with on the most part but after the test drive I have a few concerns about the Ypsilon.

The interior isnt as luxury as made out and I actually think the 500 seems better put together when sitting inside.

The ride is a bit bumpy like the 500 but un like the 500 that holds the road well the ypsilon has quite a bit of body roll/lean.

Although the Ypsilon has 5 doors the back seats are actually smaller and less comfortable than those in the 500. I can only assume this was done to allow for leg room/larger boot.

The ypsilon is also more expensive and would cost more to have lounge spec model. If you go for 16" alloys you have to pay £650 on top for the tyres to go on them. That seems like a lot of money to me.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks.

when the gadget show recently had one they absolutely slated it. if you want small and fun i would go for the 500 if i had to choose between the two. open the floor up to other makes and models and there are far better cars for the money, that said the 500 will hold its value well

Unless I'm mistaken I believe the Ypsilon shares the same floorpan as the new Fiat Panda?

If so the new Panda could well be an option too. I used to have a 500 until about two weeks ago when we picked up the new Panda, and I have to say it retains all the driving fun of a 500 but is much more composed in terms of ride comfort.

FWIW I really don't like the look of the new Ypsilon. I respect the fact Lancia (oops, sorry, Chrysler!) have done something different, but it is too odd looking for my liking. All IMHO anyway!:D

IMO the 500 is a bit girly, and would you really wanna buy another if you've got one sat on the drive already? Punto is a bit bigger and a bit more masculine!!

The Ypsilon is a bit on the ugly side.

But at the end of the day you're the one gonna be spending a small fortune so just weigh it all up!

Test drove the new panda twin air today and compared to the 100hp

its very loud but its quite a nice loud thump, but it always wants you to change gear and the clutch doesn't communicate at all :(

but it was very grippy not a great deal of body roll which i was suprised about just don't expect it to be fuel efficient and accelerate at a reasonable rate!

The Ypsilon has the same suspension as the 500, but I believe it is built on a slightly longer wheelbase and has different spring/damper rates.

The new Panda has a very different front suspension, with the spring and damper attachment points being separated, and different wishbones, The rear suspensoin is similar but modified. The track is wider than the Ypsilon too I think. So, the Panda chassis is uprated.

The TA can give very respectable perfomance, or economy; but not both it seems. As for driving it, it needs to be driven like a Diesel, but the engine revs so quickly that it will take a while to adapt to. Cars with more conventional engines need no such adaption. I had no problem with the clutch but I agree that it is not a conventional drive.

I'd go for the Panda, but if they give a very good discount on the Ypsilon...? I also reckon the Panda will hold its value better because it will be more of a known quantity, if this matters?

I saw quite a few Ypsillons in Italy last year and I must admit to being disappointed by initial reports in the press. I thought the little Lancia was distinctive and stood out more than virtually any of its competitors.

I think I'm with maddogmorg on this as well. I think I'd get the Ypsillon and buy some Lancia badges.

Thanks for all the replys guys. Very interesting reading...

Yes (road tax/insurance/consumption) are all factors in my decision.

I hear what your saying The Beard I'm disappointed too but it just didn't drive very well. Very soft and bouncy and felt cheap. And the back seats are awful. Theres just about enough for my dog to sit on! Maybe if it had Lancia badges it might have felt slightly different. Defiantly a mistake imo putting Chrysler badges on it!

I had a grande punto before the bravo. Nice little car and fun to drive but i don't really wanna go back to it.

I don't really like the Panda's looks, not saying its not a good car but the looks just don't do anything for me.

Im not a mini fan either tbh.

What about an Alfa Mito 1.4 95hp Veloce?

Does people think it will have comparable punch to my 1.9 120hp Diesel Bravo?

Thanks Guys, This is helping me a lot in finding the right car. My wife is fed up or hearing about it!!
