my multi is so noisy, had the wheel bearings looked at but seems ok. Its just so noisy inside, not engine noise though,I did read that from new, the multi had a shield under the engine which I no longer have, does anyone have anything to say, much appreciated, dogman.

Mine is just the same.. over 50 miles an hour it starts then when you reach 70 the noise is deafening, if I knock it out of gear so the engine is on tickover the noise is just as loud. Wheel bearing seem fine. :bang::bang:

Can you narrow down if noise front or rear.
Is it a droning sort of noise.

Tyre noise?

Some brands/patterns really drone at higher speeds, particularly the cheap ones.

Can't really tell, the vibration fills the car and becomes very loud and as I said before if I take it out of gear and let it coast the noise stays the same.

Wheel bearings can appear 100% fine with wheel jacked up and spinning wheel yet can still be very noisy in use.
I had a multipla come to me with a very noisy rear wheel bearing. Luckily the owner told be which side to change first , turned out to be the other side. Both sides felt identical.

If you can get someone else to dive , take out the rear side seats, sit in middle seat and listen if louder at rear that front.
Varying vehicle speed may help.

Check for gearbox leaks and gearbox oil level.

Check exhaust system too.

Vibration suggests wheel out of balance, or could be wheel bearing.

I had a rear bearing fail on my Alfa (related chassis), there was no play, but plenty of noise, the bearing fell apart when we dissasembled it.

Does the noise change when cornering, louder/different in one direction than the other => wheel bearing.

Go for a drive with a friend, get them to sit in different seats, see if they can pinpoint where it's coming from.

If the noise comes from all around, it's tyres.

Do you always drive the same road? I haven't been to the UK for over 10 years, but I remember some of the motorways still having concrete surfaces, which were a lot louder than tarmac.

A Multipla is a big tin box, so it's going to resonate pretty good and make sounds harder to track down than in a car.

Edit:
Jack got there first, I type too slow.

I'm going out in the car this morning so I'll sit the wife in the middle at the back.
I first noticed it when we went on a 3 hour drive with the rear seats out also at that time it was intermittent, that is slightly noisy then very noisy.
I will report back later.. Thanks.

Sounds like it's coming from the rear then, rear seats in/out/folded make quite a difference.

Just had a short ride in the car and on a straight road I snaked it, when veering left the noise increased going right it subsided. Plus it sounds more to the back although I'm not 100% on that. Can anyone tell me which side the faulty bearing is?

just had the back wheels off. Nearside looks fine, offside grinding noise, took the cap off, nut and washer and there is spots of rust and WATER in the bearing. Put some quality grease in it and will be ordering a bearing. Even the grease has made a difference.
Wheres the cheapest?
Thanks one and all..

Thanks for the offer but I will have to pass, just a tad to far.
I will try my local spares shop, see if I can get away without paying postage.

Got the new off side rear hub kit today, half an hour to fit it (the drum took the longest), took it for a spin "silent", the old bearings where brown and there was rust stains on the stub axle. Just before the repair we drove 10 mile down the A1 and the noise from that bearing was so loud we couldn't hear the radio.
All done now, I would like to thank all you guys for your invaluable advice. All I've got to worry about now is the EGR valve that has been scrubbed clean to within an inch of it's life but is still throwing up the insufficient pressure fault!! :bang:
