Hi everyone,
I am new to both this forum & servicing charges in general, really hoping someone can give me an opinion on the charges I've been given for an interim service!

I own Fiat Brava 100 SX Au, it's 11 years old. My granda left it to me, I've had it 3 years now - zero problems other than replacing the battery last year. It's went through 2 MOTS no problems.
I had it serviced last year at a local garage (they didn't give service plans, or a receipt - but it was only £90). I noticed recently it's not switching between the gears as smoothly, so thought I'd have an interim service/diagnostic.

THey told me in advance service would be £154. In reality, it has cost :
£154 (+VAT) for labour = £184.80
Forte engine treatmeant = £11.76
Engine Oil = £34.08
Oil Filter = £4.06
Brake Fluid = £9.12
-----------------------------------
Service Total = 243.82

That is before they started the work I told me I'd need, which was replacing the front tires (£124.68)
And the rear break cylinders (£26.50 for the cylinders, £42.79 for brake shoes, £8.23 for a fitting kit, £11.76 for brake cleaner,) total = £89.28.

I'm worried they saw a young woman coming in alone & just took the proverbial. But then this is my first car, and first 'proper' service, so maybe these charges are normal & I'm just naive?

Any opinions would be great,
Cheers, Holly

they should have quotes the full price for the first bit, or said its +parts + vat
they only need a squirt of brake cleaner, they have charged you for 5,ltrs

what engine oil did they use? that is a lot of money for oil trade fully synth is only about 20 for a gallon

what make are the tyres?

Thanks so much for your speedy reply.
Not sure what engine oil they have used, they haven't specified. Think they'll be getting a ringback later to find out..
The tyres are Evergreen EH22 175/65.

Have just noticed by the way that it isn't just 'break cleaner' I've been charged for, they've labelled it 'break cleaner, gear oil and sundries' (sundries!!?)

Whereabouts in the world are you?
That's a lot of money for a service, for that kind of cash I'd expect something major to have been done but that's all pretty simple stuff.
I can only assume sunderies would be things like replacement seals, o-rings or washers but they are only pennies. Gearbox oil on the other hand is pretty pricey stuff.
The brake shoes and cylinders seem to be overpriced to me (pretty sure I got them for my car for about £5 each for the cylinders and maybe about £25 for the shoes. Have a look at Shop4Parts and see how the prices differ from what you've been quoted.
