Burning Oil

Hello Ffoxy -
Wet compression tested today as follows:
1 = 300psi
2 = 300psi
3 = 260psi
4 = 280psi
I am assuming the differnces are within tolerable range and as putting oil in unmeasured (by hand) then that may account for this.

Assume I now need to take the head off again and probably check for cracks as well as checking the valve guides ?

Sadly from those much increased readings wet, I'd say the rings / bores are badly worn... if the head was the problem the oil wouldnt have made much, if any difference to the original dry test :(

The slightly lower compressions between 3 & 4 might also indicate a head or gasket leak between the cylinders....

The pressures all look fine but a broken oil ring could put up consumption. Also the head gasket can leak from the oil feed drilling into a cylinder.

Make sure the head is skimmed (if only a light touch) and the block face is clean.

Compressions dry on a cold engine are
180 psi - No1
200 psi - No2
180 psi - No3
210 psi - No4

Thats quite a difference

Agreed, but not *that* bad. I've seen 140psi and only minimal oil consumption.

It should also be done on a hot engine wet and dry or its means very little.

40% down tested the way it has been, and I agree on the oil scraper ring, thing is these readings dont give the OP a clear steer on what to do for a cost effective fix.

Personally I think, on balance, I'd trade it in.

Always an option but you need to hear a used motor running & even then it's a bit of a lottery...

Thanks for the help and advice. I am in two minds at the moment - weighing up the two options, a nother engine fit seems at first glance the cheaper option so I may look around local breakers for a low mileage write off that I can see working as a donor. I figure the Trade-in option will cost me a lot more and in the long run. Will keep you posted.
