Hello I've just bought :cool: a Fiat Punto Sole from 1995. I need to change the oil, coz the service book is lost. But Im pretty confused. What oil should i put in my punto? Its 1.1 , and its not diesel :eek: lol...
Ive look at mobil1, total 9000 full syntetics... :bang:
pls help
 
but why not use full syntetic 5/40? whats the diffrence?:idea:
 
hmmm and whats the diffrence between semi and full syntetic?
whats better for my punto? (ive used full syntetic on my fiesta 97' and the motor was reborn...:rolleyes:)
 
I doubt that the fully synthetic was responsible...............

Difference(s) are:

Semi synthetic contains less synthetic than fully synthetic.
Semi synth costs a lot less.

A fully synth (of the correct grade, natch) will withstand higher temperatures better.

BUT, in a cooking engine like your stock 1108 FIRE, you're not going to encounter anything like those temperatures, so it's a waste of money. You'd be better off using more money (as it were) shortening the oil and filter change intervals.

Were you running a turbocharged FIRE engine or a very highly tuned NA one, a fully synthetic oil would make sense.

The money is not an issue, but i want to be a quallity oil coz i use this car just for 5k km per year :eek:
 
I'd swap to 6 monthly oil and filter changes -- it's short trips which do the most damage to oil. I rather like Halford's own part synthetic, or the Lucas semi synth. Rallycinq like GM semi synth. Both of the latter you can buy pretty cheaply at your local factors, the Halfords stuff is only cheap with a trade card.
 
It will also be fine with diesel grade oil as long as its the right viscosity grade. A diesel however wouldn't be happy (for long) on petrol grade oil.

Another issue with full synthetic - its usually thinner than plain mineral but gives the same bearing protection. Fine with a new engine. But in an old one with wide piston & valve clearances it will all end up down the exhaust which wont do the catalyst any good.

how can a mineral oil be thicker than synthetic oil of the same grade?:confused:
 
Agreed it was too short and not quite what I meant

I used 5w50 Mobil 1 in an old turbo diesel engine and it was used/burnt like no tomorrow yet ordinary 20w50 lasted much longer (and seriously cheaper). I cant imagine it all got used during engine warm-up and the hot viscosities should be the same.
