In 2008 i purchased a grande punto from anrold clark from gorgie road in edinburgh now relocated to sighthill industrial estate. Over the past 2 years since i bought the car i have had constant problmes with the steering and had been returned to arnold clark for repair under warrenty... To date it had been in 7 times for major work on steering cloumn times 2, steering rack, track rod ends drop links what ever they are, anti roll bar and recently the power steering has failed completely almost running me off the road several times. The car had to be returned once again to arnold clark only this time have identified the cause refused to fix it as the terms of the warrenty had reached the maximum limit for claims. So until a technitian from fiat came out to inspect the car i was basically told there was nothing they could do until then, which left me stranded at their gargae with no courtesy car and no offer on transport home until the issue was resolved by fiat... after complainting to trading standards citizens advice fiat head office the finance company fiat have finally agreed to repair the car but i only found this out after walking 5 miles to the garage to see what was going on as they had the car virtually all day.. I still have had to contact from arnold clark or fiat regarding this matter and i am still with out the use of a vehicle as no one at arnold clark seems to have the slightest clue when my car will be fixed or how long it will take. Still no offer of a courtesy car but for first time fiat owners i would advise against this as arnold clark bill you 11.50 a day for insurance costs plus fuel. The main question i would really like to know from fiat is if the steering fails again even though it is still under warrenty which they say is maxed out even though i have purchased additional auto care cover until 2013, will they repair it again until the car had been made safe to drive. Has anyone had similar issues with steering on the grande punto

can the steering rack be changed without the dealers assistance? does the unit require referancing on a computer.

I had similar problems with my power steering the steering was hard and making a grinding noise when turning. I took the car into Fiat for diagonostics (£70) which confirmed I needed a new steering column. i found the part for £280 on ebay (as opposed to the £735 fiat wanted just for the part) from a company that reconditions steering columns in bristol, they use your vehicle reg to make sure its the right part. the part also comes with two year warranty. I then had fiat install the new column (£108). This has fixed the problem on my grande punto the car drives like new now but most of all i got the job done for half the price that fiat qouted me (£835) just by sourcing my own parts. i advice anyone with the same problem to do the same.
