I've not seen the forthcoming North American version of the Fiat 500, but I understand it will have an OHC 1.4 litre engine.

Does this engine have a timing belt or a timing chain?

Thanks,
Chuck Edwards

It seems the US will get the current 1.4 Multiair, with 105hp, and the usual belt cam.
It's being built in Mexico - the car - the engine is being built in the US.

The new Twinair 0.9 engine has a chain, and Fiat is saying that it MAY come to the US later. They are concerned that the Americans will dismiss a small twin cylinder engine, even if it delivers the same power, better torque, and much better economy.

is it just these engines or are they finally going back to timing chains instead of rubber bands? i can see the advantage of less rotating mass with a belt but the extra reliability a chain has makes it much more sense for most cars.

Fiat will have to re-enter the US market with standard (generally acceptable) technology and then can revise as Fiat's reputation advances.

I find a timing belt a negative but, if the rest of the package is desirable, would purchase it anyhow. I had a 131 in years past and like Fiat's approach to driving.
