Just bought a 57 plate 120 Diesel Multijet..37K..spotless drives very well still has 3 months manufacturers warranty left.

One problem though and it is only first thing in the morning and posssibly if I have to start the engine again in the next couple of minutes.
When I turn key to MAR wait till warning lights go out and depress the clutch when the engine catches there is a loud juddering/shuddering/vibration coming from the engine..doesnt happen when engine is warm.
Arnold Clark have checked the car and said that all tests were ok and advised that it needs to go to their FIAT dealership which I will be doing next.

Any clues?

Take it to a Fiat dealership who will be able to cure this(y)

You sound confident.

Care to shed a little more info on what you believe is wrong and why you are so confindent a Fiat dealer will be able to immediately fix.

Sounds to me this is a known problem, subject of Fiat campaign/technical update so we all want to listen and learn which is why this forum exists.

Please dont tell me what I should be saying or when I should be saying anything, if there is something I know then I'll decide wether or when to say anything.

Anyway it's called commonsense...........its a Fiat car at a non-fiat arnold clark garage, not rocket science to say these people (with due respect) are not the best at finding this fault!

Nick..want to give me a heads up before car goes to garage on Wednesday...should I be telling the dealer I know there is a problem and where do I find it on the Fiat campaign/technical update?
Thanks.

Nick..want to give me a heads up before car goes to garage on Wednesday...Graham

Wish I could Graham. I'm relitively new to diesel engines after 37 years of petrol engine exerience. I'm here to learn and pass on my knowledge, which is quite extensive on some cars, just like you are here for help.

I have some "trade" autodiagnostic data but this tends to be generic and not make/model specific.

Regarding Fiat campaign/technical update then this is basically dealer only till somebody else shares the information.

When I was a formal technical registrar of the Fiat Twin Cam Register and Fiat Motor Club (GB) and also independenlty provided "product reports" via official channels to Fiat UK Product Engineering, then I could get hold of most technical stuff. Sadly over the last few years my links with Fiat UK have deminished except for Strada Abarth matters.

Just for fun, the only thing a Strada Abarth has in common with a modern diesel engine is "real pulling power/torque". Don't ask me to explain...just drive one :)

Old technology rules.

Strangely you said that your garage said all tests were OK. This is a typical classic error. Plug the diagnostic box in and believe the result.

I won't expand but to say that these diagnostic tools are no better than the basic knowledge of those who try to drive them.

Fiat Edinburgh had the car all day yesterday.....cant find anything wrong....

What the hell do you do next???

phone fiat uk and start a dispute/case...

its obvious theres somthing wrong with your car and it should be sorted

Agree with this.

Freephone number 00800 3428 0000 anywhere in Europe

If you are unaware then Fiat UK have Zone Managers. You can request to meet with the zone manager and discuss your case/problems. This will normally be at a Fiat dealer near to you, or of your choice.

As you only have three months warranty left then raise the calls/case NOW. Don't wait. Also you can see the zone manager at any dealership. You just need to get an appointment with him/her at a time and location that suits you and where he/she is scheduled to be.

Wish you luck

sounds like the problem is you've bought a diesel :p

seriously though, diesels can be a bit rough when first started but just how rough is impossible to get across on a forum. just follow the advice given to contact fiat now, before the warranty is up. If it's just a 'charecteristic of the engine' then they should be able to say why ie if it's the tappets or something, but sounds like there might be an underlying cause to the issue.

Strange thing is that the noise every morning now differs..sometimes its negligible..other mornings its louder. Took out an extended warranty with the motor so its covered till September 2012.
But it bothers me to the stage that I was thinking of trading it..but gonna lose £1500 in a month....for a 2 year old Peugeot petrol 1.4 207..but you have to be happy driving your car.
Mate who has his own mechanics busines said that it is perhaps just characteristic of it being a diesel and the fact that it only does it from cold shouldnt be a worry.
